April 11, 2025 — Google publicly demonstrated its latest augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) prototypes during the ‘TED2025: Humanity Reimagined’ conference in Vancouver this week, revealing a lightweight pair of AR glasses and showcasing the forthcoming “Moohan” mixed reality headset that the company is working on in partnership with Samsung.
Shahram Izadi (pictured above), Head of Android XR at Google, took the stage wearing a prototype of the AR glasses, which feature a small display and integrate Google’s Gemini AI. Resembling standard eyewear, the glasses apparently work with a smartphone to remain lightweight while performing AI-enabled tasks such as real-time language translation and image recognition.
In a live demo, Izadi showcased the glasses translating Farsi speech into English and scanning a book cover for contextual information.
“These glasses work with your phone, streaming back and forth, allowing the glasses to be very lightweight and access all of your phone apps,” Izadi said during the presentation.
Alongside the glasses, Google also previewed in a separate demo a mixed reality headset that it is building in collaboration with Samsung. Codenamed “Project Moohan,” the headset, supports passthrough video and features multi-window interfaces and immersive 360-degree video experiences. Moohan was initially unveiled by Samsung at a joint event including Google and Qualcomm for the launch of Android XR late last year.
While neither the glasses nor the headset have a confirmed release date, both products are a sign of Google’s ongoing efforts to compete with offerings from Apple and Meta in the spatial computing space. Further announcements may follow at Google I/O 2025 next month.
