Their different routes and results give the defending champions more than one credible challenger.
The eight teams entering the Thunderpick World Championship 2026 finals will play at BLAST Arena studio in Malta. The LAN brings the teams together in person after the earlier online stages of the wider circuit. Entry to Malta secures a group spot; teams still have to earn playoff spots there. The invitations and qualifiers therefore lead to the same opening stage.
Who Is Playing in Malta?
The September 16 team announcement lists FURIA, Falcons, Legacy, Aurora, BETBOOM, 9z, PARIVISION, and Virtus.pro. Virtus.pro claimed the one available berth through a 16-team closed qualifier. The other seven entrants received invitations, rather than advancing through that same qualifying competition.
The announcement listed Falcons second, FURIA fourth, Legacy sixth, and Aurora ninth in its HLTV ranking snapshot. Those positions reflect the field at the time of the announcement, not the teams’ October rankings or tournament seeds. They place Falcons and FURIA among the leading names while also identifying two other highly ranked entrants. A September ranking position cannot settle how those teams will perform in Malta.
How the Groups Lead into the Playoffs
The opening stage uses two double-elimination groups of four teams, with two playoff places available in each. A first-series defeat keeps a team in contention; a second eliminates it. The results within each group determine advancement, rather than a combined table covering all eight entrants.
The winners of the two opening series meet in a winners’ match. Its winner qualifies for the playoffs with two series victories and no defeats. The losers of the opening series meet in an elimination match, where another defeat ends one team’s campaign. The elimination-match winner then faces the loser of the winners’ match in a decider for the group’s second playoff place.
Both qualifying routes require two series wins. The first qualifier finishes the group 2–0; the decider winner finishes 2–1. The teams eliminated along the way finish 0–2 or 1–2. Advancing teams play either two or three group series, depending on their route.
Every group match is best-of-three, so a team needs two map wins to win a series. Map scores and group records measure different things: a team can lose a map and still win a series, while the double-elimination rule concerns lost series. That distinction explains why losing a map does not automatically send a team into the elimination match.
The four playoff qualifiers enter a single-elimination bracket. Both semifinals remain best-of-three, but a defeated team has no further route to the title. The winners advance to a best-of-five championship match, which requires three map victories. The final therefore raises the number of maps needed to win the match after the earlier rounds have been decided by a target of two.
Winning the title in Malta requires four LAN series victories: two in the groups, one in the semifinals, and one in the final. A group-stage defeat adds another match to that route without changing the number of wins needed. The groups permit that recovery; the playoffs do not.
The Contenders
Falcons have a tournament win against another Malta entrant this season: they defeated FURIA 3–0 in the IEM Cologne 2026 final. The June final ended with three 13–8 map scores. It gives Falcons a concrete championship credential and FURIA a finalist appearance, without treating a summer result as proof of October form.
The recap also recorded five runner-up finishes at major tournaments between Falcons’ PGL Bucharest victory in April 2025 and Cologne. The win converted that run of finals appearances into a championship. It supports Falcons’ place among the leading contenders, although they must advance through the Malta groups alongside the other seven entrants.
The September announcement also recalls FURIA’s 2025 victory over Natus Vincere. They completed a reverse sweep, losing the first two maps before winning the next three to finish the final 3–2. That championship used all five maps; Falcons’ Cologne sweep ended after three. Both finals show how the same best-of-five format can produce matches of different lengths.
Legacy bring their reported FISSURE Playground 3 victory, adding another tournament winner to the field. Their championship and Aurora’s September ranking position broaden the contender discussion beyond the two headline teams. FURIA have the event’s most recent title, Falcons have the Cologne head-to-head win, and Legacy have a separate trophy. Their group allocations determine which contenders can face each other before the playoffs.
