Monster Hunter Outlanders allows players to experience a full Monster Hunter game on mobile devices. It is important to have responsive controls because of the different combos and actions you can do in combat. The game offers two different modes and control types for the game that players can choose at the beginning. This guide goes over which controls you should use in Monster Hunter Outlanders, and why.
Which Controls are Better in Monster Hunter Outlanders?

The choice between Adventure Mode and Classic mode is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Overall, a mix of Classic controls with Adventure mode activated gives the best experience. There are some unexplained details players should be aware of before deciding which is the best way to play the game.
Adventure Mode
This is the mode recommended for beginners or a “casual hunting experience.” It is said to provide smart combos, full combat information, and hints.
During combat, this means that monsters will glow red right before you should dodge or counter their attack. This warning can be a bit misleading because you will sometimes need to wait a second after seeing the red before actually pressing “React” to dodge it.
All actions are also tied to just 3 buttons: Attack, React, and Burst.
Depending on the weapons, this means some abilities will be held with the attack, while others might use react or burst as part of the normal combos.
Classic Mode
This is the mode that will be familiar to most Monster Hunter veterans. It does not make the monsters glow to give attack warnings, or give in-hunt dialogue guides.
It does give you full access to the controls for every weapon. Every skill, attack, dodge, and react button is shown on-screen for players to take advantage of during battle.
This is the mode to pick when you want to play like in previous Monster Hunter titles.
Adventure Mode, Classic Controls
You can actually get the best of both worlds by opening up “Settings”.
- Go to “Mode” and select Adventure.
- Go to “Controls” and select Classic.
This will give you the full combat information and hints in Adventure mode, but you will keep the full control scheme of classic.
The simplified controls of Adventure can actually hurt new players and make it harder to learn and understand each weapon. Classic controls let players see and understand every skill, but it can be difficult to dodge monster attacks as a new player.
The game does not tell you that you can combine them. This way, new players, or even veteran ones, can get the attack warnings and extra info, while still being able to play with the full controls as intended.
Monster Hunter Outlanders provides a new and interesting way to play the series. Mastering the controls will make the journey in this new game a much smoother one.
