Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s long-gestating, chaotic opus has finally clawed its way onto Nintendo’s newest hardware, and the Switch 2 Edition of Mewgenics proves that more than a decade of development hell was well worth the wait. Running flawlessly both docked and handheld with crisp UI scaling, responsive controller mapping, and buttery performance, the sprawling, evolving tactical roguelite is easily one of the most addictive titles on the platform.

Yet, beneath its wonderfully grotesque veneer, stellar audio-visual flair and masterful grid combat lies a core thematic friction that proves surprisingly hard to shake: for a game so deeply focused on raising, breeding, and bonding with your feline squad, it insists on treating them as utterly disposable.

A Masterclass in Chaos, Style, and Sound

From the moment you boot it up on the Switch 2, Mewgenics dazzles with a relentless identity. McMillen’s signature visual language—familiar to anyone who spent hundreds of hours crying in basements in The Binding of Isaac—is firing on every cylinder here, but with a refined sense of scale and polish. The art style is a triumph of squishy, morbid charm. As always, McMillen combines the cute, insidious and outright disturbing with panache. Mutant feline designs manage to be simultaneously unsettling, adorable, and hilarious.

As your cats acquire weird genetic traits, battle scars, and horrifying physical mutations across a run, their visual representations update with grotesque detail. The hand-drawn aesthetic, paired with grimy, melancholic, and bizarre backdrops across Boon County pops with vivid colour and clarity on the Switch 2 display.

Complementing the visuals is an unforgettable soundtrack courtesy of Ridiculon. Returning to collaborate with McMillen once more, the music easily ranks among the best in recent gaming memory. It seamlessly shifts from high-octane, frantic acoustic rhythms during intense tactical turns to slow, atmospheric ambient themes back at the cat sanctuary; often littered (pun intended) with haunting vocality.

The sound design breathes life—and gross texture—into every action, from the satisfying crunch of a heavy elemental strike to the pathetic, squishy yelps of an overmatched kitten. You’ll find yourself humming tracks like “Flush” long after putting the console into sleep mode.

Moment-to-Moment Gameplay: Deep, Unpredictable, and Endlessly Addictive

When you’re down in the dirt on the tactical grid, Mewgenics is nothing short of brilliant. The moment-to-moment combat takes the positioning and turn order nuances of classics like Final Fantasy Tactics or Into the Breach and infuses them with pure roguelite unpredictability.

Every turn is a intricate spatial puzzle. You aren’t just selecting abilities from a menu; you’re orchestrating chain reactions. Knocking an enemy back into a puddle of toxic waste, igniting that waste with a fire-slinging Mage cat, and then using another to pull a boss into the resulting explosion never stops feeling immensely satisfying.

The class variety, item synergies, and mutation trees allow for a near-infinite array of strategies. Whether you are running a glass-cannon party of hyper-fast  felines or a bizarre stall team reliant on life-steal and status ailments, the gameplay loop remains aggressively engaging and evolves through the gradual introduction of new classes and mechanics.

The Switch 2 handles the density of the combat encounters with grace. Even when the screen is cluttered with dynamic elemental hazards, dozens of status effect indicators and dozens of units on screen, performance stays solid, making handheld play an absolute dream.

The Catch: Disposable Paws and Broken Bonds

For all its mechanical and artistic achievements though, Mewgenics stumbles on a core emotional level—specifically, how it forces you to relate to your squad.

The game heavily leans into a life-sim and breeding loop between combat runs. You spend time managing your sanctuary, watching helpless kittens mature, carefully choosing bloodlines, and passing down rare genetic traits across generations. Naturally, you begin to form genuine emotional attachments to these creatures. You remember the underdog alley cat who barely survived Act 1 and became the matriarch of your ultimate physical damage strain, or the goofy, blind, three-legged caster who somehow clutched a boss fight with 1 HP remaining.

You name them, customize their look, and invest hours into nurturing their bloodlines.

Yet, once you enter a run, Mewgenics pivots hard into a cynical, meat-grinder mentality where your cats are fundamentally disposable commodities.

Because roguelite difficulty scales aggressively and permanent death is swift, the game actively discourages holding onto individual cats. Optimal play requires viewing your feline companions not as beloved pets or brave companions on a long journey, but as temporary biological tools to be harvested, min-maxed, and inevitably discarded. This wasn’t necessarily surprising; there are a number of ominous figures scrabbling for you to “donate” your wards to them and let’s face it; Ed has form when it comes to mistreating cute characters.

But when a cat you’ve spent five hours breeding, levelling and gearing gets wiped out by a random critical hit or a brutal environmental cascade in the game’s later chapters, the narrative and mechanical framing expects you to shrug, toss their body into the scrap heap, grab the next batch off the sanctuary conveyor belt, and keep moving.

This design creates a jarring friction between the game’s two halves. The breeding & house system asks you to care, invest time, track lineages, and build personal connections with your feline family. Yes, much of this is randomly decided and unexpected injuries are somewhat expected, but you are still asked to invest in your pets. Runs then punish you for caring, forcing cold, transactional min-maxing and treating every life as cheap filler, and then asks you to give them to a nutter who will do unspeakable things to them.

By making cats so cheap and expendable, Mewgenics repeatedly devalues the exact emotional bonds it works so hard to foster during the downtime between runs. Victory often leaves a bittersweet, somewhat hollow aftertaste when you realize that the heroic cat who carried your family is simply meant to be swapped out for a slightly better stat-stick.

    Final Verdict

The Switch 2 Edition of Mewgenics is a phenomenal, content-packed achievement. It is a wildly creative tactical RPG that will easily swallow hundreds of hours for fans of deep mechanics, gross humour, and top-tier presentation. Its art style is iconic, its soundtrack is legendary, and its minute-to-minute tactical grid play is among the finest the genre has seen in years.

Just go in with your heart guarded. Mewgenics wants you to love your cats, but it won’t hesitate to throw them in the trash the moment a slightly better set of stats comes along.

    Review Summary

Mewgenics on Switch 2 is an addictive tactical roguelite packed with grotesque humour, brilliant combat, deep customisation and an outstanding soundtrack. It runs smoothly in both docked and handheld modes, but its treatment of beloved cats as disposable resources undermines the emotional connection the breeding mechanics encourage.
