SteamOS 3.9 uses a different Wi-Fi system on new installs than on upgraded machines. A fresh install now defaults to wpa_supplicant, which Valve says improves compatibility with various networks, while an upgraded Steam Deck or Steam Machine stays on the older iwd until you change it, according to the SteamOS 3.9.3 beta notes.

The change covers the whole 3.9 line. Valve has also improved wpa_supplicant so it reconnects quickly after sleep, which previously only worked with iwd.
A fix for Steam Frame adapter problems
Two owners say the Steam Frame’s wireless adapter would not work under iwd. On a Steam bug report they describe the adapter failing to scan for networks, logging the same error every ten seconds and never attempting to connect.

Both fixed it by switching to wpa_supplicant. One said the link came up first time afterwards, with stable streaming since, and the other confirmed that turning on the “force wpa_supplicant backend” option and rebooting solved it.
The fault seems narrow. One owner could still join an ordinary 5GHz network under iwd and suspects the problem lies with the hidden 6GHz network the Frame’s adapter uses. Valve has not commented on the thread, and its notes mention only “improved support” for the adapter.

How to switch
If you installed SteamOS 3.9 from scratch, you are already on wpa_supplicant. If you upgraded, you are on iwd until you enable the wpa_supplicant option under Steam, Settings, Developer.
Valve has been working on the adapter from several angles this month, including a fix for Wi-Fi power saving that kept switching itself back on. The same beta also restores a kernel feature Waydroid needs.
