Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Arrives August 27 – Learn More About This Compelling Prequel

After one year of silence, we are incredibly happy to come back with a brand new XBOX Games Showcase trailer along with the official release date for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy – August 27, 2026.

We can’t wait for players to experience the game for themselves. But before then, we wanted to share a little more about the journey ahead, the themes at the heart of this new adventure, and some of the mysteries waiting in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.

Fierce and Restless

15 years before the events of A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy follows Sophia as she takes control of her own destiny in search of the truth behind her past.

From a very young age, Sophia learned how to fight and survive. Raised within one of Venice’s most feared gangs, she experienced her first battles and plundering expeditions in the city. Over time, she became one of the gang’s strongest fighters, developing a combat style that reflects both her agility and determination. Sophia is fast, precise, and relentless in combat, but she also approaches every encounter with intelligence and adaptability.

Building a game around a character like Sophia gave us the opportunity to explore a different approach to gameplay to what we’ve seen from the previous Plague Tales games, with a more direct and dynamic combat system. Because Sophia fights in close quarters, we spent a lot of time thinking about how to make combat feel fluid, impactful, and satisfying, while still remaining accessible and easy to understand for players.

It was an exciting step for the team, but also a challenging one. Our previous games focused on characters who were not naturally fighters, so designing gameplay around someone as combat-driven as Sophia pushed us to rethink many aspects of our approach. You can see what we’ve created throughout the trailer, with one-against-many combat, exciting traversal, and more.

Exploring New Territory

However, as you can also see in the trailer, Venice is not our key location for the game. In Resonance, Sophia is forced to leave everything she has ever known behind, and sets sail toward the Minotaur island, accompanied by Leni, her closest friend.

As far back as she can remember, Sophia has been haunted by visions of an ancient era. Her memories are fragmented and unclear, but she cannot shake the feeling that something, or perhaps someone, is waiting for her there. Throughout the game, Sophia will try to uncover why she is tied to this place, what role she is meant to play, and what purpose awaits her there.

At its core, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is a story about self-discovery. In many ways, it remains deeply connected to what we have always loved creating at Asobo Studio: strong characters facing overwhelming odds while searching for where they truly belong.

Exploring a new setting and drawing inspiration from the myth of the Minotaur allowed us to push the universe in a different direction while staying true to the identity of A Plague Tale. Creatively, it opened the door to new themes, new visual inspirations, and new approaches to gameplay. We spent a great deal of time researching mythology and history to build environments that feel both grounded and haunting, while also designing larger combat spaces, deadly trials, and more aggressive encounters for Sophia and her companion.

This new direction also gave us the opportunity to rethink puzzles and exploration. We wanted the island to feel like an endless labyrinth, filled with hidden paths, forgotten secrets, and lingering mysteries waiting to be uncovered.

As players venture deeper into the island, they will begin to uncover the truth behind the myth itself and confront a mysterious presence lurking in the shadows. Its influence resonates with the lore established throughout A Plague Tale, while also expanding the different manifestations of the terrifying Macula curse in unexpected ways.

We can’t wait for players to finally get their hands on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and discover why this adventure feels both new and deeply connected to everything we’ve created before. Resonance brings a more action-focused experience while remaining rooted in the mystery, tension, and emotional storytelling that define the world of A Plague Tale.

With this project, we wanted to expand the lore of the universe while giving players the opportunity to experience a new kind of story and gameplay within an IP that means so much to us.
