Meta spotlights an under-the-radar VR sci-fi gem: Free demo available now

The VR rhythm game Rager is getting a boost from Meta’s Oculus Ignition program and heads to Early Access this September.

The indie team at Insane Prey is one of just 21 studios — selected from over 500 applicants — to join Meta’s Oculus Ignition funding program. According to studio founder Adam Jůva, the program has given Rager’s developers a rare chance to expand and polish the VR rhythm game, which was initially slated for release last year.

With six months of support, the team tackled known issues from the original demo and upgraded everything from visuals to gameplay mechanics. Collaboration with the Oculus Ignition staff was smooth throughout. “Meta’s feedback on each milestone was crucial, as it shaped our decision-making process when weighing different directions for the game,” Jůva shared.

Now that Insane Prey has checked off the final milestone in the program, the focus shifts to getting Rager ready for its Early Access debut in September. In the meantime, the demo has been updated — so anyone interested can see firsthand how the game has evolved.

CONTEXT

Rager: Where Tron meets Beat Saber and Pistol Whip

Rager takes the familiar formula of VR rhythm games and puts its own spin on it. Rather than slicing through blocks or dodging projectiles, you’re squaring off against robotic enemies who attack in sync with electronic beats. The action unfolds in a neon-soaked sci-fi arena that channels serious Tron vibes.

Gameplay is all about precision with your virtual swords or maces — sometimes blocking, sometimes striking, sometimes dodging. Just before each enemy attack, time slows down and a bar signals when you need to react.

The updated demo for Rager is free to try on Meta Quest App Lab and Steam. The Early Access launch is set for September on Quest 3, Quest 2, Quest Pro, and PC VR via Steam, with a Playstation VR 2 version also in the works.
