Remember the first time you put on a VR headset and realised you could turn your head and simply look around? Or the first time a motion controller made a virtual gun vaguely tangible in your hand? Perhaps it was your first encounter with mixed reality, as a virtual zombie crashed through your very real living-room wall.
These are defining moments in a VR lifetime: experiences that briefly make the technology feel genuinely new again. The Woojer Vest 4 gave me another one.
It is intense, physical, and immersive in a gloriously punishing way. At its best, it adds an entirely new sensory layer to games, films, and music. At maximum intensity, it feels roughly how I imagine being kicked by an elephant would feel, assuming the elephant had excellent rhythm and supported Bluetooth 5.0.

What Is the Woojer Vest 4?
The Woojer Vest 4 is a wearable haptic system, but I don’t mean haptics in the traditionally subtle controller-vibration sense. This isn’t a faint buzz to acknowledge that you squeezed a trigger. It turns bass frequencies into powerful physical movement across your torso.
The easiest description is that it’s a surround-sound subwoofer you wear.
I was a huge fan of the old Subpac wearable bass system, but it was a fairly blunt solution. A single large transducer on your back vibrated whenever it detected sufficiently low frequencies. It was effective, but not particularly nuanced.

Now in its fourth generation, the Woojer Vest uses six individual transducers: two on the front, two on the back, and one on either side of your waist. The control and input unit sits on top of the left hand side transducer.

These respond to frequencies between 1Hz and 250Hz, with different processing modes available to determine which parts of the audio signal get turned into haptic feedback (which is a fancy way of saying a variable low-pass filter).
Design and Comfort
The Woojer Vest 4 is available in black or white, with the white model intended to complement a white Meta Quest headset rather than offering any additional functionality. That said, they are some loops on the belt to rest your controllers in on the edition only, which is a nice but subtle touch.

The vest itself isn’t particularly heavy at around 3.3lbs, or 1.5kg — barely noticeable, in fact — and combines neoprene and faux leather on the outside with breathable mesh against the body. Adjustable straps around the shoulders and waist allow it to fit snugly, which is crucial: the transducers need close contact with your body to work properly. They seem long enough to accommodate any body size, and had no trouble fitting around my 43-inch waist.

It does, however, add another insulating layer. During active VR games, especially in warmer weather, you’ll sweat more than usual. The mesh helps, but you can’t fight thermodynamics. Anyone already emerging from Beat Saber looking like they just had a shower probably shouldn’t consider adding a 3.3lb padded vest. You can buy washable liners, but that’s an added expense on an already expensive accessory.

The Vest 4 is slimmer than older Woojer designs and doesn’t feel excessively bulky, but it remains another piece of equipment to put on, adjust, connect, and remove. The experience can be brilliant, yet there will still be evenings when you can’t be bothered with the additional friction.
Unboxing and Initial Setup
I wouldn’t normally devote much space to charging a gadget, but the Vest 4 has a couple of setup quirks worth knowing before you begin.
Woojer recommends charging it fully before first use, which can take up to three hours using the supplied power adapter and USB-C cable.
The charging port is on the rear of the vest. There is another USB-C port on the front, but that one is intended for audio rather than charging. A small red warning sticker identifies the correct connection, and I recommend leaving it in place.
You’ll also need the Woojer Device Manager app. A card in the box warns that a firmware update may be mandatory, so update the vest before spending too long experimenting with connections or wondering why something isn’t behaving correctly.
The app controls haptic intensity, audio routing, processing modes, Bluetooth connections, and synchronisation. Although the physical controls let you make basic changes to volume and intensity directly from the vest, the app is an important part of getting the best results rather than an optional extra.
Once updated, you tighten the vest around your torso, connect an audio source, connect headphones, and decide how violently you would like today’s session to proceed.
How Does It Feel?
Not being one to tiptoe into these things, I immediately turned the intensity up to full. This was a mistake, but an entertaining one. At maximum intensity, the Vest 4 felt like I was being beaten up across my chest and shoulders from several directions at once. Beaten up in a fun way that was syncronized with my music, admittedly, but still beaten up. I probably shouldn’t have jumped right into the happy hardcore.
The upper transducers are especially forceful. Gunshots create a convincing kick across the shoulders and chest, to the extent that the Vest 4 substantially reduces the appeal of a dedicated haptic gun stock. You don’t feel the recoil in your hands, but you do feel the report of the weapon hit your upper body with remarkable force.

It is difficult to communicate just how powerful the Vest 4 can be without making it sound like a novelty massage vest. This isn’t merely a strong vibration. The transducers can deliver distinct taps, knocks, pulses, and sustained waves of pressure, depending on the source material.
An explosion can arrive as a heavy punch. An engine becomes a continuous mechanical growl across your rib cage. A bass line rolls around the torso. It can be quite overwhelming.
The two waist-mounted transducers felt less dramatic on my body, though that may be because several years of dedicated beer-belly development have provided them with additional acoustic insulation.
Gaming Performance
The Woojer Vest 4 works best with games that have clear, deliberate low-frequency effects.
Shooters are the obvious showcase; Battlefield 6 took on a whole new dimension. Gunfire, explosions, vehicles, and collapsing scenery all translate particularly well. The effect isn’t only more dramatic; it can also make busy environments easier to interpret because different kinds of sounds acquire a physical character.
In VR, that extra layer is especially convincing. Visual immersion already persuades your brain that you’re somewhere else, and the vest gives everything a physical consequence. Rhythm games are another natural fit; a strong beat can ripple across, while different elements of the track trigger different areas and degrees of movement. I swear it actually made me better at Pistol Whip.
Racing and simulation games also benefit enormously. Engine vibration, gear changes, collisions, road surfaces, and nearby vehicles all contain the sort of bass-heavy information the Woojer will diligently replicate.

Not every game benefits equally, of course. Dialogue-heavy adventures, slower strategy titles, and games with constant bass-heavy music can produce an undifferentiated background rumble. Because Woojer is interpreting audio rather than receiving dedicated haptic events from the game, the quality of the result depends heavily on the sound mix. Woojer even recommends reducing background music so effects aren’t confused with the bass line.
Wired or Bluetooth
The Woojer needs access to the raw audio signal from your device. Because the vest doesn’t output “normal” sound of its own, it sits between the source and whatever headphones or earbuds you’re using. Audio can enter through Bluetooth, a 3.5mm connection, or USB-C. It can then be passed to wired or Bluetooth headphones, allowing you to mix and match connections depending on the source device.
In theory, this provides enormous flexibility, but it can take a moment to get your head around the routing.
For example, when using a Meta Quest headset, sending audio to the Woojer means it will no longer play through the Quest’s built-in speakers. You must connect headphones or earbuds to the vest to hear the original audio.
Bluetooth is the neatest option because it avoids dangling cables between your headset and torso, but it also introduces noticeable latency — around 140ms of latency with Bluetooth to Bluetooth. For music listening the delay can be compensated for through Woojer’s sync controls. For gaming, particularly rhythm games and fast shooters, wired audio is the safer choice. That said, I didn’t notice a huge difference; a balance of using wired on one side seems like a sensible trade-off.
A standard 3.5mm audio cable in included in the box, but there’s no doubt the extra cables can get annoying. The cable on the PSVR2 is barely tolerable at the best of times. With a wire going from that to the Woojer, then another to my wired headphones, and remembering to put the headphones on last, it all got a bit silly.

PC users have more options. Software such as VoiceMeeter can split audio between the Woojer and another output device, avoiding the need to route headphones through the vest. That provides a cleaner hardware setup once configured, but it adds software complexity.
I experienced no Bluetooth audio dropouts during testing. Some reviewers have reported connection issues, but these may have been addressed through firmware updates.
Processing Modes
The Woojer app provides several processing modes designed for different types of content.

Gaming mode reduces processing to minimise latency and attempts to suppress some continuous musical elements, allowing discrete in-game effects such as gunfire and explosions to stand out.
Broad mode is better suited to films and music, where you generally want the Vest 4 to respond to a wider range of bass frequencies. It produces the fullest and most dramatic sensation, but can also make busy material feel relentless at higher intensity levels.
Focus mode narrows the response further, helping emphasise specific low-frequency effects rather than turning every bass note into a party on your pecs.
These modes make a substantial difference. The Vest 4 is not something you should simply set to maximum and leave there for everything. A configuration that feels spectacular in an action game may become exhausting during a film, while settings suited to music can turn a shooter’s soundtrack into an endless massage.
Some experimentation is required.
Audio-Driven Haptics: Strengths and Limitations
The most important distinction between the Woojer Vest 4 and some competing vests like the bHaptics is that Woojer does not require (nor does it offer) direct game integration.
It listens to the audio signal, extracts the bass frequencies, and translates those into movement. The Bluetooth connection is carrying audio rather than receiving specifically programmed instructions from the game (though it does also use a separate Bluetooth data connection for managing via the phone app).
That makes the Vest 4 universally compatible. It can work with any game, console, VR headset, phone, film, or music source capable of sending it audio. You don’t need to check a compatibility list or wait for developers to add support.
But it also means Woojer doesn’t truly know what is happening. A dedicated haptic system can be told that you were shot in the left shoulder, struck by something behind you, or caught in an explosion. The Woojer only knows that the audio contains particular frequencies in the left or right stereo channel.
Despite the six independent transducers and Woojer’s references to 360-degree sensation, the input signal is fundamentally stereo. The vest can create an impressively enveloping physical effect, but it cannot provide the precise positional feedback of a system receiving native game telemetry. It isn’t actually surround sound.
This is both the Vest 4’s greatest strength and its central limitation. It works with everything, but it understands nothing.
Battery Life
Woojer claims up to ten hours of battery life, although real-world performance will depend heavily on intensity and connection method. Running six transducers at high power naturally consumes more energy than gentle music playback.
But for most gaming sessions, battery life is unlikely to be a serious problem. The greater inconvenience is remembering to charge yet another accessory each week.
Is the Woojer Vest 4 Worth It?
The Woojer Vest 4 is one of the most effective upgrades for immersion that I’ve used in years. It is expensive, requires additional setup, makes hot VR sessions even hotter, complicates audio routing, and occasionally reacts violently to sounds you would rather it ignored. But it’s absolutely worth the hassle.

Unlike a haptic gun stock or dedicated motion simulator, it isn’t limited to a particular genre. You can use it for VR, flatscreen gaming, racing, films, or music. That broader usefulness prevents it from becoming a very expensive accessory for one specific experience.
It does not stop being expensive, however. Depending on your location and whatever promotion Woojer happens to be running, it costs roughly as much as an entry-level VR headset at anywhere from $349 to $499 (in the UK and Europe). That makes it difficult to recommend to casual players, particularly anyone who is still assembling the basics of a VR gaming setup.
For enthusiasts who already own the headset, headphones, gaming PC, racing rig, or home cinema they want, the Woojer Vest 4 offers something genuinely different to upgrade your experience. It makes familiar games feel fresh, turns powerful sound design into a physical performance, and occasionally hits you hard enough to leave you breathless.
