The tenure of Le’Veon Bell with the New York Jets has long been viewed as a rough patch in his career, but new allegations suggest the environment behind the scenes was far more chaotic than fans ever imagined. During a recent appearance on The Justin Laboy Show, Bell made a series of explosive claims regarding his former head coach, Adam Gase. According to Bell, he frequently caught Gase using cocaine inside his office shortly before team practices.
According to BroBible, Bell stated that he witnessed the behavior with his own two eyes, painting a picture of a coach who was far from the professional standard expected in the NFL. Bell did not hold back when describing his assessment of Gase, going so far as to label him the dumbest coach ever. This lack of professional conduct mirrors the recent case of Columbus Aviators coach Ted Ginn Jr., who was charged with driving while intoxicated.
While reflecting on his time with the organization, Bell recounted the frustration of walking into the coach’s office to find him engaged in this alleged activity. He vividly recalled the feeling of disbelief, noting that he would often think to himself, “We got practice in 28 minutes and this is what you’re doing in here?” This sentiment was shared in a clip from the show that has since gone viral on social media, sparking intense conversation among football followers.
Bell really waited until Gase got a new job to drop this bomb
Beyond the shocking claims of drug use, Bell also unleashed a lengthy rant regarding Gase’s inability to effectively manage playcalling duties or lead the team as a head coach. The statistical reality of the Gase era in New York supports the idea that the team struggled mightily under his direction. Gase served as the head coach for Gang Green during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, managing a dismal record of 9-23. During those 32 games, the Jets were outscored by a total of 297 points.
This represented the worst point differential in the entire NFL over that specific time frame. Despite his reputation as an offensive-minded coach, Gase oversaw a unit that ranked 32nd in scoring during both seasons he was at the helm. The 2020 season was particularly brutal, as the team set a franchise record by losing its first 13 games. The relationship between Bell and Gase was clearly strained from early on.
Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets, which included $35 million in guaranteed money. He made his debut with the team against the Buffalo Bills, but the team lost 17-16. While Bell managed to put up decent numbers throughout the 2019 season, finishing with 245 carries for 789 yards and three touchdowns, along with 66 receptions for 461 yards and a touchdown, the team performance was inconsistent.
The 2020 season brought even more trouble. Bell suffered a hamstring injury in the opener, leading to a stint on injured reserve. Upon his return, he liked a post on social media suggesting that the team should trade him. When asked about this interaction, Gase expressed his disappointment, saying, “I hate that’s the route that we go with all of this instead of just talking to me about it, but it is the way guys want to do it nowadays.” Shortly after, the Jets released Bell after failing to find a trade partner.
The timeline of Gase’s tenure was marked by constant instability. Hired as the 19th head coach in team history, he briefly served as interim general manager after the firing of Mike Maccagnan on May 15, 2019. By the time Joe Douglas was hired as the permanent general manager in June, the team had already been through a whirlwind of administrative changes.
On the field, the team stumbled to a 1-7 start in 2019 before finishing 7-9. The following year, Gase’s team hit rock bottom with the 0-13 start. By the time the team finally secured a win against the Los Angeles Rams on December 20, 2020, the season was already lost. Gase was eventually fired on January 3, 2021, hours after a final loss to the New England Patriots.
Following his departure from New York, Bell spent the final year-and-a-half of his professional career playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gase, meanwhile, stepped away from the professional spotlight for a time, eventually coaching at Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, Michigan, his hometown. In February of this year, however, Gase made a return to the professional ranks.
He was hired by the Los Angeles Chargers to serve as a passing game specialist, filling the vacancy left by former passing game coordinator Marcus Brady.
