League of Legends World Championship tickets are appearing for over $3,000, but Riot may not be the one to blame

The esports community is raging after the 2026 League of Legends World Championship finals tickets went on sale. Passionate fans set their alarm, verified their account through three different two-factor apps, waited in a digital queue with thousands of other people… Then saw almost every seat vanish in 30 seconds.

As you may have guessed by now, those tickets popped up on resale sites, marked up by roughly 300%. The scalping crisis in competitive gaming has reached a boiling point, but it goes far beyond esports. It’s a complex situation that’s under legal scrutiny after multiple safeguards failed to deliver the tickets to esports fans.

And you may be placing the blame on the wrong entity.

When general admission tickets dropped for the 2026 League of Legends World Championship final at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the entire inventory seemed to disappear instantly. The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York has seating for 19,000 people. That seems pretty large, but the Chengdu Dong’an Lake Sports Park Arena, which had 18,000 seats, sold out last year.

A lot of these seats, however, apparently went to partners, sponsors, and… Blech, influencers. We all know how much esports fans love that. According to Concert Informant, 3,200 tickets went to the Fan First pre-sale and 1,100 went to influencers (among other entities), but this has not been verified. Even if this were true, there would still be about half the venue left. Despite this, Riot apparently only dropped 430 tickets on Ticketmaster.

Not surprisingly, the small number of tickets sold out immediately. And they were apparently sold to scalpers, who listed the tickets on resale sites like SeatGeek for upward of $3,200 right away. The tickets were originally priced between $120 and $350.

Riot responded to the chaos, apologizing that the Fan First ticketing process did not go as planned. The team explained that they required fans to verify their accounts to prevent bots, but ticket access had been distributed via a draw system among those verified accounts rather than using the expected single queue.

The apology seemed to be missing the bigger issue: the scalpers.

Replied one frustrated fan on X: “If you look up the accounts of the people reselling their tickets today and hardware ban all of them, you are forgiven.”

It seems that Riot’s anti-scalping methods didn’t work. Back in 2024, Riot introduced this “Fan First” program that required fans to register for ticket sales with their Riot ID. The Ticketmaster account email must match the Riot account. Riot would then filter these signups using “signals that bot accounts are unlikely to have.”

Unfortunately, scalpers still managed to purchase the limited number of tickets and then list them for thousands. Sigh.

Esports Insider asked Riot to discuss the Fan First program and the ongoing issue with scalpers, but we never received a response.

This is not an isolated League problem, to be fair. In June 2023, VALORANT Champions Grand Final tickets appeared on Ticketmaster for as high as $1,000 within hours of the sale. The original ticket prices were as low as $40.

It’s not just Riot either. Earlier this year, in the Dota 2 scene, fans trying to grab passes for The International 2026 in Shanghai experienced a total meltdown when tickets vanished in seconds, only to reappear on third-party apps for $1,400. It’s not just Riot.

Ticket scalping has definitely caused a rift in the esports scene, which grew out of grassroots tournaments and a sense of inclusivity and community. Esports is still pretty niche, so having the opportunity to attend these tournaments alongside other fans from all over the world is a unique experience to share. Having the opportunity seemingly ripped away by scalpers trying to sell thousand-dollar nose bleeds is clearly not going to create any permanent growth or long-term fans in the scene.

I mean, the FGC wasn’t even willing to pay $6 for some pay-per-view Street Fighter 6 matches featuring the top players in the world at Capcom Cup 12. This is a community that’s used to watching free Twitch streams, bringing their PCs to free LAN side events… Growing it into the more mainstream industry that investors hope to make it will require accessibility.

However, event ticket scalping goes far beyond esports. According to one fan’s Reddit post, Riot has been redirecting frustrated fans to Ticketmaster. And therein lies the main issue: Ticketmaster is handling the ticket sales.

Taylor Swift fans were just as outraged as Chinese Dota 2 fans back in 2022 when a massive bot attack crashed Ticketmaster during the Eras Tour ticket pre-sale launch. There were over 3.5 billion requests that day, forcing Ticketmaster to suspend sales. Meanwhile, tickets had gone up on resale sites, causing desperate fans to pay up to 70 times more than the ticket was originally sold for.

This is an ongoing issue in the entertainment industry. So much so that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sued Ticketmaster for “tacitly coordinating with brokers and allowing them to harvest millions of dollars worth of tickets in the primary market.” The lawsuit claimed that Ticketmaster (owned by Live National Entertainment) will then sell those illegally obtained tickets on the secondary market to get a way bigger payout.

The September 2025 lawsuit also accused Ticketmaster of imposing strict limits on the number of tickets consumers can purchase for an event (while brokers don’t have the same limitations), forcing fans to turn to resale websites to buy more tickets. Or any tickets at all.

I reached out to Ticketmaster and obviously did not hear back. Womp.

But Ticketmaster did make a statement on the issue after the FTC got involved. Ticketmaster called the lawsuit a “distorted view of the facts and the law.” However, it did admit that “ticket brokers” are industry standard. Of course, Live Nation commented that ticket brokers having multiple accounts and scalping tickets by bypassing sales were not a “conspiracy” but just part of the whole ticket-sale thing. In other words, it’s expected across the industry and not their fault.

“To be sure, it has gotten out of hand, especially since scalpers developed automated tools for creating Ticketmaster accounts,” Live Nation wrote to U.S. lawmakers. “Given the level of abuse we are now seeing, we are no longer permitting this. It’s unfair to artists and fans, and it is time to do something about it.”

With Ticketmaster controlling 80% of concert and event tickets, including esports tournaments, this is a huge problem. Entertainers like Coldplay and Dua Lipa caught wind of the insider scam and urged for fan protection.

A month later, the BBC reported that U.K. lawmakers planned to combat exorbitant prices on resale sites. The government set a limit on resale tickets, capping them at 30% above the original ticket price.

The FTC’s lawsuit is still ongoing, but ticket brokers are facing the consequences. One ticket broker, which used international agents and proxy servers to buy more than 100,000 concert tickets for big names like Metallica, is being forced to pay $300,000 (the original settlement was for $10.7 million, but the broker, Elite Events, is broke).

The argument was that Elite Events violated the Better Online Ticket Sales Act, a federal law passed in 2016 that ultimately made scalping illegal. This could mean that other entities can be persecuted under the same federal law.

The scrutiny is growing as punishments are finally doled out, leaving Ticketmaster in the spotlight. As a result, there have been attempts to rectify what they’ve let scalpers do to concerts over the past few years. In April 2026, Ticketmaster announced that it was working with Harry Styles to “catch scalpers” and get the tickets “back to fans” at their original price.

Ticketmaster also added that the tickets in the request campaign are all under $130. This caused immediate backlash from Harry Styles fans, who responded on X that many had paid $700 to $800 for scalped tickets sold directly on Ticketmaster’s website.

Ticketmaster responded: “We’re seeing a lot of questions about this! Scalpers often target the lowest-priced tickets so they can flip them for the biggest markup. The tickets in this Request campaign are a limited subset of the residency that were originally priced under $130. These were the most affordable seats and were specifically targeted by the scalpers we caught.”

Convenient. Many felt that this tweet was a “non-answer” that Ticketmaster kept repeating. The company never acknowledged that scalpers were selling tickets at upwards of $1,000 directly on the website. Nor did they address why scalpers were allowed at the pre-sale.

Due to ongoing issues with Ticketmaster and its refusal to address scalpers, it doesn’t seem like fans will have much luck securing the remaining League of Legends Worlds 2026 tickets. If even Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Metallica fans are complaining without any real solution, I think the League of Legends esports community is cooked for now.

It’s currently not confirmed why Riot is using Ticketmaster for its ticket sales. But the likely reason could mean Riot had no choice: The Barclays Center was using SeatGeek but switched to Ticketmaster in 2023 due to ongoing technical issues. And likely because it was missing out on a ton of events: Live Nation has been accused of operating as a monopoly, with reports claiming CEO Michael Rapino “threatened” that it would be “difficult” to bring shows to the Barclays Center.

As of now, Ticketmaster is controlling the Barclays Center ticket sales, including Worlds. This makes it pretty tough to blame Riot, although you’d think they’d be avoiding Ticketmaster and its partnered venues after so many ticket issues year after year. You’d think Riot would be trying to develop another ticket-selling process. Or maybe at least make the tickets non-transferable, so scalped tickets would hold no value.

Then again, this is the same company that let its SSL security certificate expire, resulting in a worldwide inability to log in and play. Maybe they’re not in a rush to find a different way to sell tournament tickets.

Meanwhile, ignore the third-party sites. Don’t purchase the scalped tickets. If enough fans ignore these wildly priced tickets, prices will go down as scalpers get desperate to recoup their losses. More tickets are dropping in August, which will also reduce the scarcity of the original tickets.

Hopefully, Riot deals with this upcoming batch a bit better, but I think it’s largely out of Riot’s hands for this event at this point. It seems Ticketmaster is controlling ticket sales, and I doubt this can be changed mid-sale. I mean, the venue is the venue.

The situation sucks, but at least this is one of those rare times that we can say League of Legends fans totally relate to Taylor Swift fans. Maybe you’re not as much of a weirdo as you think. We’re all just fans who want fair ticket prices at the end of the day.
