Javier Bardem has found his next television role, and this time he will have enough money and ambition to try to shift the center of American financial power.
HBO has ordered The Spread, a new Miami-set drama starring and executive produced by the Oscar winner. The project reached the network after a competitive bidding process and received a straight-to-series order.
Bardem will play a billionaire operating in a version of Miami increasingly shaped by hedge funds, enormous fortunes, nightlife and ruthless competition. His character gathers the “brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous” around him before turning their ambitions loose on the financial markets.
His goal reaches beyond making another fortune. HBO’s description says the billionaire wants the power to shift America’s “center of economic gravity” toward Miami and determine how long the city’s increasingly extravagant party can continue.
HBO Wants to Explore Miami’s ‘Gilded Chaos’
Miami is more than a backdrop in The Spread. HBO’s official announcement describes the city as an emerging “Wall Street South,” where industry titans, elite hedge funds and staggering wealth collide with sex, nightlife and competition.
Into that environment comes Bardem’s unnamed billionaire. HBO calls him a visionary who surrounds himself with ambitious and potentially dangerous people before putting them to work in the markets that power the country.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama series and films, said the network had wanted to build a scripted series in Florida for some time. “Having long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida, HBO couldn’t be more excited to explore the gilded chaos of Miami,” Orsi said in the announcement.
‘The Spread’ Sparked a Competitive Bidding Fight
The Spread went to market before ultimately landing at HBO with a straight-to-series commitment. TheWrap reported that the project generated a bidding war before HBO secured it.
The package combined Bardem’s involvement with a financial-world premise and an established creative team before a full supporting cast had even been announced.
A straight-to-series order also means HBO is moving forward with the drama without first making a conventional pilot and then deciding whether to commission a full season. HBO has not yet announced how many episodes the first season will contain.
An ‘Ozark’ Co-Creator Is Building the Financial World
Bill Dubuque, who co-created Netflix’s Ozark, will write and executive produce The Spread with Sean Sansiveri. Kingsman filmmaker Matthew Vaughn will direct and executive produce. Bardem is also an executive producer in addition to playing the central billionaire.
The series is a co-production with Fifth Season TV Studio. Brad Weston will executive produce for Makeready, while Ian Stratford and Michael Bloom executive produce for Topic Studios.
Fifth Season executive Noah Greenshner described the series as a story about “power and ambition” set against Miami’s glamorous backdrop, saying the creative team was assembled to capture the energy of both the financial world and the city around it.
Bardem’s Billionaire Is Still Mostly a Mystery
HBO has disclosed the character’s enormous ambitions without revealing his name, history or exactly how he accumulated his wealth. The people he recruits are also still unknown.
Bardem is the only cast member HBO identified in its initial series announcement, leaving the “brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous” characters surrounding his billionaire to be cast later.
The role continues a recent run of television work for Bardem. He starred in Apple TV’s Cape Fear earlier in 2026 after receiving an Emmy nomination for portraying José Menendez in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
