May 8, 2026 – Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has recently announced that it has acquired Cinemersive Labs, a UK-based machine learning and computer vision company. According to SIE, Cinemersive Labs will contribute to its efforts to enhance gameplay.
Founded in 2022, Cinemersive Labs brings together a team with expertise in computer vision and machine learning. According to the company’s LinkedIn page, its patent-pending technology enables the acquisition, conversion, processing, storage, and transmission of images and videos in six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) 3D for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications.
Prior to the acquisition, Cinemersive Labs was developing technology that converts smartphone photographs into volumetric 3D immersive experiences, with applications available across Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, and the web.
The company’s approach centred on two setups: a proprietary five-camera rig calibrated to subpixel-level precision for professional capture, and a monocular acquisition method using generative AI to produce 6DoF 3D photographs and videos from a single smartphone camera. Its ‘Parallax’ product offered volumetric photographs, while a separate app delivered 6DoF immersive video captured via a five-camera rig or smartphone.
Following the acquisition in April, the Cinemersive Labs team has joined SIE’s Visual Computing Group (VCG) and is contributing to the company’s broader efforts in advancing visual computing within games. SIE stated that this includes applying machine learning to enhance gameplay visuals, improve rendering techniques, and unlock new levels of visual fidelity for players in order to deliver richer, more immersive gameplay experiences.
