The iconic horror series ‘Scream’ has released a new teaser for its upcoming seventh installment, which will be in theaters on February 27th. The brief footage suggests the comeback of Sidney Prescott, Neve Campbell’s character, the very first lead character in the series. However, the announcement has already caused a huge controversy among the public, with several people claiming that they will not see the film due to the controversial production practices that have been observed.

The crowd gets to view a fresh and extremely scary side of the ghost of the past. The ‘Scream 7’ teaser that showcases the famous voice asking ‘Do you like scary movies?’ has been just unleashed and along with it comes a chilling threat targeted at Sidney Prescott played by Neve Campbell once more. The voice dares, ‘Your daughter is the same age you were when this all started’ thus making a vow for a very personal and generational horror. The film has already generated a lot of excitement among fans and is set to be released on February 27th, a date that the horror community suddenly feels is very close.
Nevertheless, the road to this teaser has been far from smooth. The making of ‘Scream 7’ was rocked by a major behind-the-scenes saga last year. The character of Seema Carpenter played by actress Melissa Barrera was removed from the film and the director Christopher Landon also left the project. Social media posts were reported as the reasons for the exits and the situation that ensued created a significant split among the fans of the franchise. Neve Campbell’s and Courteney Cox’s comeback is viewed by some as a blessing while others consider it to be a continuing controversy.
The online reactions have been very mixed. To put it mildly, it is not a collective scream and it is more of a shouting argument.
The talk of boycott is the most highlighted aspect of the discussion. A user spoke about it very straightforwardly, ‘and we will NOT be watching,’ which is indeed a representation of many similar comments made by others like ‘We are not going to watch this crap,’ and ‘No thanks we will be boycotting.’ Most of these remarks are in favor of Melissa Barrera, one of them said, ‘we support melissa barrera and we will not be watching this flop movie.’
On the opposite side, the loyal fans of the franchise are already preparing and are putting the date on their calendars. ‘We’ll all be there opening weekend,’ an excited user shared. Someone else just stated, ‘we will be watching this banger on release night baby, lets goooo.’ The thrill is really apparent for the people who have been following the Woodsboro storyline from the very first film.
Besides the boycott topic, the other feedbacks comprise skepticism about franchise longevity and also sheer bewilderment regarding the plot. One reviewer remarked, ‘Franchise fell all the way off.’ Another was like, ‘When will they be finished draining this cow dry..’ demonstrating franchise weariness. There are also conversations going on about possible spoilers, one internet user commenting, ‘Crazy how we already know who the killers are,’ and another one adding a rather long, unproven plot outline involving multiple Ghostfaces and some character fates.

The teaser is characteristically ‘Scream’—packed with tension, ironic at the same time, and ready to draw in and again the horror with Sidney’s family. Still, the sequel’s plot is more pronounced, to a degree, in the comment sections than in the movie itself. It is difficult to predict if ‘Scream 7’ will succeed to slice through the real-world noise and deliver a scare that is worth it. The movie will be out next February, but the audience’s conflict has already begun.
