Meta Horizon OS v2.9 can hold three Quest windows next to one another or stack them, through a window manager reached from Quick settings, and it is a Public Test Channel build rather than a general release. Meta’s Quest release notes say the v2.9 features “will become available starting the week of September 28, 2026 and will gradually roll out to people who are enrolled in the Public Test Channel”.

Windows are now launched spatially, Meta says, “making it easier to drag and position your apps”. The window manager also shows every window that is open, and stacked windows are cycled by clicking the top portion of each one.
Meta gives no device list for the window manager, although it names Quest 3 and 3S for other v2.9 changes, so which headsets get it is not established. Nor has anyone outside the programme used it: the notes are Meta’s account of what it changed, with no owner reports behind them.
Three panels is a working limit rather than a generous one, but it is the difference between a browser, a store page and a video running together and a constant shuffle of one panel at a time. Cycling a stack by clicking its top edge is a desktop convention arriving in a headset.
Windows snap to a wall when you push one at it
The other half of the change is anchoring. Windows “now attach to surfaces more reliably”, Meta says, and moving one close to a wall snaps it into place.
The standalone anchoring option has been removed from the control bar in the process. The control bar instead carries a dedicated grab handle for each window, with a button on either side to reach advanced options or to close it.
Meta does not call the removal a loss, and does not say whether wall snapping covers every case the old control did. Anyone who anchored a panel to something that is not a wall will find out first.
Meta has not dated the general release
None of this is on retail Quest headsets yet. The Public Test Channel is an opt-in Meta runs through its own enrolment page, and Meta has published no date for when v2.9 reaches everyone else.
The most recent general release was v2.7, pushed to Quest 3, 3S, Quest Pro and Quest 2 from the week of August 17, 2026, which renamed Remote Desktop to Virtual Display and gave it HDMI input through an optional adapter. Meta last overhauled the interface around those panels with the v77 update in May 2025, which brought a rebuilt Horizon OS look and 3D Instagram photos.
v2.9 is the point at which those panels get managed rather than merely placed. Owners who want that before the general build have to enrol a headset in the test channel and accept pre-release software on it, which is the usual trade for going first.
