I do love a good survival simulation game and Forever Skies takes an interesting turn on the genre, one which I have seen done before and one that I loved. The setting is kind of what we are used to in these sorts of games a post-apocalyptic setting, but the overall selling point for me is that your base of operation is a high-tech airship.

Yes, your base is a flying monstrosity that you use to navigate through this ecologically ruined earth. After seeing the trailer, I knew this game would be one I needed to get my hands on, so I approached Far From Home to request a copy of the game politely and they happily provided a copy on the PlayStation 5. Once I clocked off work, I went home, booted up Forever Skies, and began my journey on this hostile earth.

In Forever Skies, you take on the role of a lone scientist who is returning to Earth after a global ecological catastrophe. The planet has been left uninhabitable by humans but has let other life thrive in our absences. Your journey back to the Planet and use a hi-tech airship to navigate the planet safely above the toxic clouds to see if there are any remnants of humanity left on the planet.

This first-person survival game will have you playing solo or with up to 3 other players to build, upgrade, and navigate the skies for resources to craft tools, build your base, and face dangers on the surface as you hunt for the cure to save humanity.

You will find yourself spending a lot of your time searching for resources and building/controlling your airship. This is your home base if you will but the big plus side with Forever Skies is that your base flies and comes wherever you go. So gone are the days of having to run back to your base when you need to manage your items as your base is always with you. You need to make sure you don’t go down to the surface of the earth as it’s still hostile hence the need for an airship.

However, you will need to make sure to maintain the integrity of your ship as it does damage over time and when attacked.

Thankfully you play as a scientist and with this know-how will be able to analyse scanned items to engineer and craft tools that will increase your chance of survival. Using tools, you will be able to extract resources from the ruins that are scattered around the map and pieces of debris that are littering the skies. By gaining these materials it will increase your chances of survival as you will be able to build better tools and bases.

Once you feel that you are fully equipped and ready to take on the challenge you will eventually go below the dust and encounter the world below the dust cloud. Here you will find new enemies and resources but mainly you’ll try and find a cure for the mysterious illness that threatens you and the rest of humanity. This return to earth is nothing like you remember and it’s been hundreds of years since you left.

Nothing is how you remember it and it will take cunning skill and wit to make sure you survive. Don’t eat contaminated food or water as this could cause you to get ill and die quicker. Forever Skies truly challenges even the best survival game players.

Graphically Forever Skies is beautiful and full of detail from the get-go. The sci-fi element of the game and the overall post-apocalyptic Earth setting makes for a fantastic landscape to explore and I find myself in wonder every time I come across a new location or a new feature/function. The audio for the game is decent and the built-in suit voice that lets you know when your health, food, or water is getting low can get annoying from time to time but I wouldn’t be without it as it gives you enough heads up to get what you need before its too late.

Forever Skies is fantastic when it comes to the base building as I love the fact that your base is an airship. I love the friend you get when building the airship as you can let your imagination run wild and I love that you also have to manage its fuel and weight to make sure that it’s still able to fly. All in all though Forever Skies is at its best when you are taking advantage of playing with others as it speeds up the resource-gathering element of the game and makes exploring Earth more enjoyable.

Like a lot of survival games, there is plenty of replay value. It’s not just the storyline that keeps you playing, you have the exploration and base-building elements to keep you invested for hours. Whether you are playing alone or with others you will constantly find yourself with plenty to do and Forever Skies keeps you on your toes at all times. The open world offers a wide range of challenges and exploration so that you are always finding something to do whether that’s discovering new resources that help you craft new gear, tools, or buildings or finding new locations that help move the story along. Forever Skies is a survival game that you don’t want to miss out on.

    Conclusion

Forever Skies is a fantastic and bold entry into the survival genre. It does a brilliant job of offering a quieter and more solitary journey through exploration and its style of storytelling. You won’t mind getting lost in Forever Skies as it’s just as fun as knowing your way. Exploration is the key selling point and it will do you well to not just go from A to B. The airship customisation is brilliant and I did love making it my own.

At first, it can be quite cramped when you just get started but then once you unlock a few modules it helps flesh out the airship and makes room for all your beds, gardens, and tools. When playing with others it takes the experience to a whole new level. Playing alone can feel sluggish at times but it becomes a lot faster when you have others. Like collecting water, food, and resources. Forever Skies does everything right in terms of what you look for in a survival game but it does lack in the enemy and combat department.

I wish there were a few more variations of enemies as well as a bit better combat. For those reasons, I’m giving Forever Skies an 8 out of 10.
