David Fincher’s sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is casting up as it prepares for a summer start of production.
Scott Caan and Elizabeth Debicki are joining Brad Pitt in the feature that is being made by Netflix.
Much of the project is shrouded in secrecy, but it is known to center on Cliff Booth, the former stuntman and body double to TV actor Rick Dalton, as seen in Tarantino’s 2019 film. It is set in a later time period than that movie. It is unclear how much of the material, if any, is based on Tarantino’s 2021 novel by the same name and which revealed more of Cliff’s backstory, including the death of his wife.
The story’s origins lie in a script that Tarantino wrote for himself to direct, but eventually put it aside. Pitt convinced the filmmaker to let Fincher take a stab at directing it, setting it up earlier this spring.
“This film is more secretive than Star Wars,” said one source.
It is unclear who Caan and Debicki are playing. One source said the story called for two key female roles, one who runs a bar and mud wrestling establishment and one a trophy wife. It is unknown if Debicki would play one of those or another role altogether. For Caan, it’s a reunion with Pitt, with whom he appeared in a trio of Ocean’s Eleven movies in the early 2000s.
The feature is heading towards a July start of production in California. Netflix had no comment on the castings.
Caan, the son of late veteran actor James Caan, has spent the last decade working in television, starring in CBS’s long-running Hawaii Five-O series and, more recently, Fox’s Alert: Missing Persons Unit. Featurewise, on top of the Ocean’s movies, he appeared in turn of the century movies Varsity Blues and Gone in 60 Seconds.
Debicki may be best known for portraying Princess Diana on the acclaimed Netflix series The Crown. Her feature credits include appearances in Ti West’s Maxxxine, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet.
Caan and Debicki are repped by CAA. Caan is additionally repped by Linden Entertainment and Sloane Offer.
