October 8, 2025 – Varjo, a provider of virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) solutions for defense and industrial applications, has today announced an updated version of its XR-4 Series of MR headsets, designed to support training across air, land, and sea domains.
First launched in 2023, Varjo’s XR-4 Series is engineered for integration with cockpit trainers, vehicle simulators, and ground training systems. The company stated that the refreshed model has been purpose-built “to close the gap between traditional simulation methods and the demands of modern training.”
Varjo stated that compared to the original model, the refreshed XR-4 Series introduces key hardware and software enhancements, including:
- A redesigned headband and slimmer rear counterweight for improved comfort during pilot training or ground vehicle simulations.
- An optional chin strap and a new front plate compatible with SteamVR tracking have also been added to increase stability and durability.
- Optimized autofocus passthrough cameras, allowing users to interact with physical objects such as maps and avionics within real cockpits while remaining immersed in virtual environments.
- Additional updates include advanced hand occlusion, a dedicated night mode for low-light simulation, and a new headset adapter for improved PC connection stability.
- An AI-improved passthrough with gaze prediction has also been introduced to enhance immersion and reduce system load during intensive simulations.
Furthermore, the refreshed model still maintains the XR-4 Series’ ultra-high-resolution visuals, offering 51 pixels per degree, a 120° x 105° field of view, and 20+ megapixel stereo passthrough, according to the company. Varjo added that its tethered Windows-based architecture ensures compatibility with existing simulation software and graphics-intensive image generators used by armed forces.

Varjo stated that it will be providing long-term operational hardware and software support for large-scale deployments of the XR-4 Series through 2030, along with professional services for deployment planning and integration.
