Cybershoes, an Austrian start-up that produced VR shoes for Meta Quest and other VR headsets, has officially shut down.
FACTS
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Cybershoes. The last MIXED article on the subject was published almost exactly four years ago. At that time, we reported that delivery of the VR shoes to supporters of the Kickstarter and Indiegogo campaigns had begun.
Now, we’ve come across a blog post by VR developer and blogger Antony “Skarredghost” Vitillo, informing us that Cybershoes has ceased operations.
Vitillo refers to a LinkedIn post by Cybershoes co-founder Igor Mitric Lavovski from last week. According to the company’s website, Lavovski led the marketing team and worked as a developer for Cybershoes.
Lavovski writes on LinkedIn:
Cybershoes GmbH was officially shut down a month ago 🙁
Cybershoes Inc., a year ago.
Production of new shoes actually discontinued nearly two years ago, and at the same time, I went on new journeys, returning to my roots in architecture.
And yet, exciting news still finds its way to me, like game developers building new games with Cybershoes.
It’s a powerful reminder of what we created: A great product ahead of its time.
Honestly, Cybershoes remain one of the only ways to walk through virtual reality. You’ve never experienced a first-person shooter like Onward unless you’ve played it with cybershoes.
Built in Europe.
We really have made a global brand out of the Viennese garage.
Straightforward Start-up story. Sweat and hard work.
I am proud of every step.
Cybershoes – shoes for walking in virtual reality.
It was an incredible journey.
CONTEXT
What are the Cybershoes?
Cybershoes was a startup founded in Vienna in 2018 by Michael Bieglmayer and five other co-founders: Doris Bauer-Posautz, Igor Mitric Lavovski, Georg Wimberger, Andreas Kern and Georg Löffelmann.
Cybershoes are worn while seated. VR users sit on a swivel chair and move their legs, while rollers built into the soles allow their feet to glide smoothly back and forth on the floor. Sensors transmit the movement into virtual reality. The Cybershoes are designed to create a more realistic walking experience and reduce motion sickness.

Unlike the first model, which was wired and only compatible with PC VR headsets, the newer Cybershoes connected to Meta Quest via Bluetooth and a module attached to the housing.
According to the official website, Cybershoes supports 81 games, including Quest titles such as The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, Arizona Sunshine, Until You Fall, and Myst.
The reasons for the startup’s closure are not mentioned in the LinkedIn post. Ultimately, however, Cybershoes likely failed due to the limited market for VR accessories.
