November 26, 2025 – Varjo, a developer of military-grade mixed reality (MR) solutions, has this week announced a strategic collaboration with Rheinmetall, a provider of defense and security technologies, to integrate its Varjo XR-4 Series headsets into Rheinmetall’s deployable virtual land training systems.
According to Varjo, the partnership aims to address an “urgent need” for scalable training capacity across Europe and NATO by equipping Rheinmetall’s modular driving and weapons simulation systems with Varjo’s mixed reality technology.
The collaboration will enable military forces to train personnel in various locations, supporting faster deployment and flexible training scenarios, according to Varjo. The company stated that Rheinmetall’s driving simulators can be transported and set up in the field, and quickly reconfigured to replicate different vehicle types.
By integrating the XR-4 Series headsets, the systems will combine physical and synthetic elements, allowing crews to interact with real hardware while immersed in virtual environments that simulate operational conditions. This achieves a level of immersion required for effective operational training without relying on large, fixed-site simulators.
“Nations need to strengthen their defense capabilities faster than ever before, and training is at the heart of that mission,” said Bartek Panasewicz, VP Training Systems Land at Rheinmetall Electronics. “Mixed reality gives us the flexibility to train large numbers of soldiers where they are needed, without compromising on the quality or realism of the experience. Varjo’s industry-leading XR technology, combined with Rheinmetall’s top-of-the-line simulators, allows soldiers to scale realistic, high-fidelity training anywhere from central bases to temporary training sites.”
Varjo’s recently refreshed XR-4 Series headsets offer high-resolution visual fidelity, realistic passthrough vision, and advanced eye tracking. The XR-4 platform also enables instructors to monitor trainee interactions, situational awareness, and performance under simulated stress.

Rheinmetall and Varjo will showcase their joint training solutions at the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) in Orlando, Florida, from December 1–4, 2025 (booth #2301), where they will demonstrate an XR truck driving simulator.
