There may not be any official confirmation of Injustice 3 at the moment, but it’s not an impossibility, either. Developer NetherRealm Studios’ love for the fighting genre was showcased in a new light with the Injustice franchise, and the potential for Injustice 3 keeps a lot of fans still filled with hope for another entry.
As the studio responsible for the long-running Mortal Kombat franchise, NetherRealm has sprinkled some of its most notable characters from the series into the Injustice games. NetherRealm is no stranger to fun crossovers. Even with its most recent game, Mortal Kombat 1, characters like Conan the Barbarian and Ghostface have padded out the game’s fighter roster. Considering these crossovers have become tradition, it wouldn’t be surprising if Injustice 3 featured other select Mortal Kombat names.

Injustice 3 Doesn’t Have to Be the End All Be All For DC Fighting Games
Injustice 3 would probably be a welcome sight for DC fans, but it’s not the only way to give those fans another fighting game to play.
If Injustice 3 Introduces More Mortal Kombat Characters, NetherRealm Will Have to Choose Wisely
Injustice 2’s Controversial Double Dose of Mortal Kombat
While the inclusion of Mortal Kombat characters in Injustice has been received well by a lot of players, there was also controversy surrounding Injustice 2 having two characters, instead of the last game’s one. The first Injustice added Scorpion, while Injustice 2 featured both Sub-Zero and Raiden. The biggest critique of the extra Mortal Kombat content was that a lot of players were disappointed that two character slots were taken up, when NetherRealm could have used the second space for a fresh crossover option. Controversy aside, there are a few strong options for Injustice 3 to use as its Mortal Kombat offering.
Injustice 2 was released back in 2017, making it eight long years since the last entry in the series.
Liu Kang
Liu Kang has taken on the role of one of the most important characters in Mortal Kombat 1‘s fresh timeline. After winning control of the Hourglass, Liu Kang started history over from scratch, setting into motion the Mortal Kombat franchise’s soft reboot. It proved to be a fascinating shake-up for the series that helped Mortal Kombat 1 feel fresh in a lot of ways. Because of his role in the new timeline, Liu Kang appearing in Injustice 3 wouldn’t be too surprising.
Johnny Cage
A fan favorite, Johnny Cage seems like another strong choice for Injustice 3. As an action star with a larger-than-life ego, Johnny Cage is a hilarious contrast to the god-like abilities held by many of Mortal Kombat‘s characters. With Injustice‘s superhero focus, this same contrast could easily be repeated, and seeing Johnny go head-to-head with the likes of Superman or Wonder Woman is bound to be entertaining.
Johnny Cage will be played by Karl Urban in the upcoming live-action Mortal Kombat sequel. The film is set to hit theaters on October 24, 2025.
Shao Kahn
With his brute strength, hulking size, and iconic appearance, Shao Kahn has been one of Mortal Kombat‘s most notable antagonists. Injustice 3 making its chosen Mortal Kombat crossover a full-blown villain character would be a fun way to shake up player expectations. Any of these characters from the fighting franchise would be exciting to see in Injustice 3, but Shao Kahn’s long-running reign as a powerful villain could prove to be a strong choice.
Right Now, Injustice 3 Remains a Mystery
There has yet to be any official word from NetherRealm regarding the status of Injustice 3. However, the future may hold a lot of hope for a third game. DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that they have spoken with both NetherRealm and Rocksteady about potential future game projects. Of course, this is far from a confirmation, but if Gunn and Safran’s new DC cinematic universe is received well, it could pave the way for a new Injustice game.
