Michael Cudlitz Reveals Terrifying Phone Call To Real 'Band Of Brothers' Hero

    Instagram/@cudlitz

Michael Cudlitz revealed a secret story of how he went through the preparation process to play the role of Sgt. Denver “Bull” Randleman in the WWII dramatization ‘Band of Brothers’. During the discussion, he recounted the risky situation of speaking to the real veteran he was about to impersonate. The experience was a real tough one for the actor, in fact, he emphasized that it was the enormous stress and the unanticipated hardships of a war hero that were intended to be relayed through him, eventually the conversation influenced his acting to such a degree that he was almost indistinguishable from the real Randleman. This insight into the acting technique sheds a new light on the overnight sleeper hit aka one of the most positively received historical dramas in the TV world.

Michael Cudlitz just revealed a jaw-dropping story which is related to his ‘Band of Brothers’ effort and will permanently change the audience’s perception.

The actor that is commonly identified with his first major impact as Sergeant Denver “Bull” Randleman in the epic World War II miniseries has just told a story about the shocking call that he made to the actual soldier he would portray. In a video clip released by the American Veterans Center, Cudlitz was heard telling the audience about what he called “the most terrifying phone call ever”.

“I was quite literally practicing,” Cudlitz recalled. “I would pick up the phone, nearly dialed all the numbers. Probably six times, put down the phone. I was talking to myself, saying, how am I going to… What should I say first? What if I can’t handle this right?”

Eventually, just when he was feeling most nervous, he dialed the number and at first, he found himself speaking with Randleman’s wife Vera who said to him, “You are the young man we have been waiting for.” That brief moment of reassurance was soon gone when Denver Randleman picked up the phone and spoke.

What happened next was nothing but a waste of time. “This goes on for about 15, 20 minutes. I got nothing,” Cudlitz admitted. “I am not getting anything from him.” The actor failed to ask the right questions and was going through his interview with such thoughts as “Tell me about the war.” and then he answered himself “Oh sht, stupid.”

Just when he was about to hang up, knowing only that Randleman was “silent,” Vera asked him if all his questions had been answered. When Cudlitz told her of the great difficulty of the topic she instead suggested talking about her husband.

“That is when everything changed,” Cudlitz remarked. “We chatted for an hour and a half. Just pouring from him what kind of person he was, what kind of man he was. The stuff he did for her before he left. How it was when he came back.”

The actor considered that discussion as giving “great information for an actor” since it was the change of focus from the understanding of Randleman’s war experiences to the understanding of how he was viewed by others that resulted in his coming realization. “I do not need to know what he thinks about what he did,” Cudlitz confessed. “What I actually need to know is how other people saw him.”

The viewers who watched the video could clearly see the importance of this method. “You can easily see the respect that he shows in the role!” one viewer commented, echoing the thought that many had regarding Cudlitz being so real.

The story surely struck the ‘Band of Brothers’ enthusiasts who are many and made up of those who still rediscover the series every time after its initial run. “I really just finished watching it last month again!” was one viewer’s answer. “It’s been years since I saw it. Soooo good. Even more touching now.”

A fan of the miniseries wrote, “I have seen it many times and I liked the character. Thank you,” along with applause and fist bump emojis that showed the unending thankfulness for both the performance and the real-life hero behind it.

Some comments also highlighted the overall impact of the series and its actors. “From an absolutely stunningly written book about a literally awesome history period,” one of the comments read, “Michael Cudlitz was the real Bull Randleman gift to the audience by a brilliant acting.”

The feedback then shifted to Cudlitz’s career after his most notable role. “One of the most underrated actors,” one admirer said. “Dude kills every role.” This sentiment was echoed by others who brought up his roles in different shows and films ranging from ‘Southland’ to ‘The Walking Dead,’ proving his talent across genres and not restricting it to historical drama.

Interestingly, one viewer even referred to an earlier Cudlitz role when he wrote, “I remember your breakout role as Tony Miller from West Beverly High,” alluding to the actor’s stint on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ before he was found out by ‘Band of Brothers.’

The story also led some of the viewers to think about rewatching the series. “I have only seen this series once…I think I definitely need to watch it again,” one viewer guessed, while another simply stated that they were “Doing another rewatch of the series now.”

Cudlitz’s revelation not only gives insight into his acting skills but also the unpredictable paths to an authentic performance. He was not even granted the graphic war details directly from the man but he found that seeing the man through his wife’s eyes was the deeper insight he needed to comprehend. He was rewarded through this method, as his performance is regarded as the most unforgettable one in a series of remarkable performances.

The power of the ‘Band of Brothers’ tale is so immense that it continues to echo over two decades later from its original release and Cudlitz’s anecdotes are just one of many sources that made the production so unique. The telling of this vulnerable moment—anxiety included and culminating in the eventual breakthrough—has once more provided us with another layer in fathoming the creation of these iconic characters.

Cudlitz’s transition into Randleman displays that sometimes the best insights come from the most unanticipated sources and that great acting is not merely about going through the same experiences but it is rather about understanding the character through the eyes of those that loved him.
