Spaceballs 2 has ‘so much of Mel [Brooks’] DNA in it’, Lewis Pullman has teased
The upcoming sequel to Brooks’ 1987 sci-fi parody flick is set to release in 2027, and Pullman has now promised fans The Schwartz is with Spaceballs 2.
Speaking with Collider, the 32-year-old actor said: “When I read the script, it’s just wildly well-designed. It’s just some brilliant writing that went into it. It has so much of Mel’s DNA in it, and then Josh Greenbaum is the dream director.
“He has such a close relationship with Mel, and he has such a good sense for that kind of humor. It was a really incredibly great experience.
“It was so fun to be able to just do full-blown comedy in that way, and remember that full-blown comedy — it all comes back to this, it’s almost like Ann Lee — it only works if there’s full conviction. It only sells itself if you fully, truly believe it in the moment.”
Pullman will be starring in Spaceballs 2 alongside his father Bill Pullman, who will be reprising his role as Lone Starr for the sequel.
The movie will also see the return of Daphne Zuniga’s Princess Vespa, George Wyner’s Colonel Sandurz, Brooks’ Yogurt and Rick Moranis’ Dark Helmet in what will be the actor’s first on-screen cinematic appearance in nearly 30 years.
As well as the returning cast, the film will feature Keke Palmer and Josh Gad, who also co-wrote Spaceballs 2 with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
While plot details about Spaceballs 2 are being kept under wraps, it has been described as “a non-prequel, non-reboot sequel part two, but with reboot elements, franchise expansion film”.
Spaceballs – which parodied sci-fi franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek and Planet of the Apes – followed Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his loyal sidekick Barf (John Candy) who are hired to rescue Princess Vespa (Zuniga), only to uncover Dark Helmet’s (Moranis) plan to steal an entire planet’s air supply.
Recently, Gad confirmed filming for Spaceballs 2 had finished, and the movie had moved into post production.
On Facebook, the 44-year-old actor said: “I cannot believe we are here. It really was Ludicrous speed, but that is an official picture wrap on #Spaceballs2 .
“3 years ago I called Mel Brooks with an idea for a film forty years in the making. I could not believe he said yes. But more importantly, I cannot believe that we actually got to make it. “This movie has been the greatest creative experience of my entire life. I cannot wait to share it with you all.”
The Frozen actor paid tribute to the production team, including director Josh Greenbaum.
Gad continued: “I would like to thank our incredible team led by one of the greatest directors I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing, @josh.greenbaum who alongside our brilliant DP @jeff_cutter , our incredible Production Designer @kohatuworkshop , our masterful costume designer @highlow_queen , our iconic Art director Nigel Churcher, our phenomenal Editor Greg Hayden, our casting director @11817.movie.casting , the Head of Makeup @lynnieob , my costumer @chute_studio and the amazing team from @odd_studio led by @adman855 have created something beyond my wildest dreams.

Gad also heaped praise on the “unreal cast who absolutely destroy” in Spaceballs 2.
