The film is planned to be available for streaming on the 12th of November and it is a spectacular venture with the comic actor and the action star about the effort of a stepfather to get close to his new stepson. The duo henceforth brings a great shift in the genre for James, who mostly does family comedies, and also it rides on Ritchson’s growing popularity as a hero.

The center is on James who plays the part of a stepdad who continuously tries but fails to connect with his new little guy. Trailer audiences have shown their excitement with reactions to it that could be described as nothing but enthusiastic, the majority being very positive and many even optimistic about the surprise duo. One viewer’s comment was so accurate that it almost sounded like a summarization of the audience’s vibe: “The pairing I never knew I needed.” The main idea was that the combination of James’s down-to-earth humor and Ritchson’s physicality was creating an interesting tension. Someone said, “Kevin James mistaken for an action hero type is the newly discovered favorite genre,” acknowledging that the actor’s usual roles are now considered in a different light.
November was undoubtedly the month of release, but more than anything, the movie was about the cast and the audience had their eyes glued on that. When the casting really shines through in such a way that their previous roles come to the mind of the viewers most vividly, it means they have hit the jackpot. The viewers were asking why the movie was not released in theaters but was going to be available only on a streaming service instead. “Why wasn’t this in theaters? I would be first in line,” a disappointed viewer lamented, and soon he was joined by another one who said, “It should definitely have been in the cinema then”. This resulted in a small debate in the comments where one skeptic described it as a “rehashed plot done a million times over,” a comment that got an immediate reply from another user who said “so are crop tops but people keep wearing those… this looks great.”
Also, the trailer’s boy character was like a magnet for attention and folk were like, he reminds them of Zachary Gordon from the ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ series. “Kid looks like a spitting image of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid child,” one movie-goer said, another even asked “Why does the little boy look like Zach Gordon in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid?” The choice of this particular casting could be seen as a further way to attract the film to families while also keeping the comical part in the actions and at the same time keeping the film suitable for kids.
Kevin James was fully backed by the audience’s response to his transition into a new genre of action-comedy. One of his fans said, “I love that Kevin James is becoming an action star,” which was the audience’s message to the actor, loving his stretching beyond the scope of his usual comic roles. The trailer shows it all, James characterizes the emotional side of the father and also the physical comedy associated with wild car chases, and explosions amongst others; so to the viewer the role is both familiar and new for James.
The other reason for the buzz surrounding the movie was the presence of Alan Tudyk that had one viewer so excited that he wrote, “Omg Kevin James, Alan Ritchson & Alan Tudyk… can’t wait!” while another one simply stated, “Love Alan Tudyk!” thus indicating that the assembly of actors is beyond the two main stars. Besides creating the action-moment-then-laughter rapport, the audience’s expectations of Alden’s reputation for stealing humorous side roles also add another layer of laugh.

The film ‘Playdate’ which has its November release date approaching very fast will be a very interesting experiment of mixing genres and star power. It appears that the movie is exploiting James’s recognizable comedy while at the same time offering him a little taste of the action, and all this while riding the wave of Ritchson’s current popularity to the fullest. The massive reaction right from the start suggests that Prime Video has certainly discovered a ready-made audience so eager to experience this particular fusion of family fun and spectacular action. It was a viewer’s comment that perfectly encapsulated the entire anticipation on the part of the audience, “This gonna be good can’t wait,” as it nicely represented the overall thrill around this odd couple and their chaotic adventure.
