Some movies justify their lengthy runtime by cramming as much story as possible into every minute, while others are so immersive that the passage of time becomes almost irrelevant. A movie can run for two-and-a-half, three, or even nearly four hours and still leave audiences wondering how the credits arrived so quickly. In the wrong hands, a lengthy runtime can make even the best stories feel bloated, but the best long movies turn their runtime into their biggest strength.
From sweeping historical epics and ambitious sci-fi adventures to intimate dramas and relentlessly entertaining action movies, the best long movies couldn’t be more different. But what they do have in common is that they’re so visually impressive, emotionally absorbing, or compelling that their runtime doesn’t become a problem.

Malcolm X
3 hours 22 minutes
Spike Lee’s movie Malcolm X follows the life of the influential civil rights leader, beginning with his childhood and early experiences with racism before moving through his years as a hustler in Boston and Harlem, his imprisonment, conversion to Islam, rise within the Nation of Islam, and eventual break with the organization. The vibrant biopic ultimately follows his transformation from Malcolm Little into one of the most important figures in American history, ending with his assassination in 1965. At 202 minutes, it’s an enormous amount of life to cover in a single movie, and it’s a deeply human portrait of the celebrated figure.
Even still, Malcolm X rarely feels like a three-and-a-half-hour biopic because Spike Lee gives each stage of Malcolm’s life its own identity. The movie constantly evolves as its protagonist does, shifting from crime drama to prison story to religious awakening to political and personal drama. Denzel Washington’s commanding performance gives Malcolm X a strong emotional anchor, while Lee’s direction ensures that even the historical material feels immediate. Rather than racing through and checking the boxes of important events, Malcolm X unfolds an entire life, so its lengthy runtime feels surprisingly natural.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is one of the most iconic and beloved fantasy movies of all time, and for good reason. Peter Jackson’s 2001 film follows Frodo Baggins after he inherits the One Ring and leaves the Shire to begin his journey across Middle-earth, alongside Hobbits, Men, an Elf, Dwarves, and a wizard. Their mission is to get to Mordor and destroy the One Ring before Sauron’s forces can reclaim it, and while the theatrical cut details this journey for 178 minutes, the extended edition is considerably longer.
The Fellowship of the Ring had a tall task as the first movie of the trilogy, but it managed to translate Tolkien’s impressive world-building to the screen without making the audience feel like they were doing homework. The Shire, Rivendell, Moria, Lothlórien, the different cultures of Middle-earth, and the history of the One Ring all become a natural part of the characters’ journeys.
More importantly, The Fellowship of the Ring constantly changes its atmosphere, moving from cozy family adventure to an increasingly dangerous epic. There’s always another character to become invested in, another place to discover, or another threat around the corner, so three hours quickly disappear.

The Raid 2

The Raid 2 picks up immediately after the bloody apartment raid, and this time, rookie Jakarta police officer Rama goes deep undercover within the city’s most ruthless criminal syndicate to protect his family. He assumes a hardened identity in prison and infiltrates the mob by befriending the boss’s unstable son in order to expose the corruption between the police department and criminal gangs. The sprawling battle eventually involves rival criminal factions, personal betrayals, and Rama’s increasingly dangerous attempt to expose the people responsible.
For a movie built around hand-to-hand combat, The Raid 2 is surprisingly expansive, but that scope is exactly what makes its runtime disappear. Gareth Evans turns the film into a crime saga in between bursts of explosive action, giving the characters and criminals enough time to develop before unleashing some of the most spectacular action sequences in cinema.
The action itself constantly evolves throughout Raid 2, from cramped prison fights to elaborate car chases and enormous brawls, so the movie never feels repetitive. Even at two-and-a-half-hours long, The Raid 2 packs enough momentum in that, by the time the credits arrive, audiences have forgotten how long they’ve been watching.

Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two focuses again on Paul Atreides, this time uniting with Chani and the fierce, desert-dwelling Fremen to wage an all-out war of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Haunted by terrifying, apocalyptic visions of a bloody galactic holy war fought in his name, Paul must choose between the love of his life and an inescapable destiny to liberate the dangerous planet Arrakis. Given the amount of story, politics, mythology, world-building, and warfare it has to handle, Dune: Part Two could easily feel exhausting, but Denis Villeneuve keeps the movie moving with remarkable confidence.
Quiet character moments give way to huge action sequences, political maneuvering leads into personal confrontations, and Paul’s complicated journey provides a clear emotional throughline. Even the quieter scenes feel enormous, while the major battles and sandworm sequences deliver the kind of spectacle that makes the audience want to keep going. Dune: Part Two hurtles along with an impressive pacing, despite never feeling rushed. Combined with Hans Zimmer’s roaring sound design, the biggest surprise isn’t that Dune: Part Two runs for so long, it’s that it managed to fit so much within that time.

Oppenheimer

A three-hour historical drama about theoretical physics and government hearings sounds like a recipe for a very long evening, but Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is explosive. Cillian Murphy gave an intense, understated performance as the brilliant theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who spearheads the top-secret Manhattan Project during World War II and gathers elite scientists to construct the world’s first atomic bomb. Following the devastating Trinity test, Oppenheimer is subsequently forced to confront the ethical fallout of his creation while facing aggressive, politically motivated security hearings back home.
Oppenheimer runs for three hours, but given how Nolan jumps between different periods of the character’s life, uses different perspectives and visual styles, and constantly introduces new scientific and personal complications, it never feels like it. Oppenheimer rarely wastes time sitting still, resulting in one of the most thrilling cinematic experiences in recent years. Proving that Nolan is just as brilliant in methodical character dramas as he is in epic and action-packed sagas, Oppenheimer has an inherent sense of escalation.

Yi-Yi

Edward Yang’s Yi-Yi centers on the Jians, a middle-class family living in Taipei, over the course of a year. The story begins with a wedding and a family crisis after the grandmother suffers a stroke, but then goes on to follow the different problems that each member of the household faces. It’s a gentle drama about the universal human experience across generations; father NJ struggles with his business and unexpectedly reconnects with an old girlfriend, while his wife, teenage daughter, and young son all have crises of their own.
At 173 minutes, Yi-Yi is nearly three hours long, despite focusing on the seemingly ordinary lives of one family. But that’s exactly why Yi-Yi deserves a spot on this list. There are no action sequences or high concepts to distract audiences from the length of the film. Instead, the late Yang manages to make ordinary life so compelling that viewers become invested in even the smallest of developments.
Yi-Yi observes relationships, regrets, familial tensions, and the extraordinary experience of growing old with impressive patience and empathy, and by the time the credits roll, it’s clear that the movie uses its long runtime to make these characters feel so real. Few films manage to be as intimate, human, and raw.

Lawrence of Arabia

David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia is almost comically long, as it clocks in at nearly four hours. The film’s original 1962 premiere ran at 222 minutes, making it one of the most famously lengthy epics in history. It follows British officer T.E. Lawrence, who is sent to Arabia during World War I to assess the Arab Revolt. Displaying surprising military genius, he somehow unites warring desert tribes into a fierce guerrilla army. However, as his victories mount, the enormous scale of the campaign eventually takes a psychological toll.
David Lean’s extraordinary sense of scale makes Lawrence of Arabia’s runtime feel justified by almost every frame. Splitting the behemoth movie into two distinct acts, Lawrence of Arabia feels less like a conventional adventure movie and more like an experience, especially thanks to the sweeping landscapes, huge battles, and Peter O’Toole’s mesmerizing performance. Its story also continuously shifts as Lawrence’s relationship with the Arab revolt changes, so it never feels like David Lean is repeating the same kind of scene. It is nearly four hours, but its scale is so immersive that its runtime is part of what makes it so special.
