Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves has an insane DLC schedule, but it may not be enough to bring the sauce

SNK is absolutely on one right now. They just pulled back the curtain on Season 3 of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and the release schedule is relentless. We are getting a brand-new character dropped every single month for a straight half-year, starting with Rick Strowd.

The developers’ strategy is pretty transparent here. They are trying to build the ultimate content conveyor belt. Fighting game devs know that the best way to get players to flock back to a title is to constantly give them shiny new toys to play with.

But as the roster expands at warp speed, a massive debate is fracturing the fighting game community. Are they giving us a buffet of unique experiences, or are they just serving up the exact same dish with a slightly different garnish?

    • Top Fatal Fury fighter GO1 drops out of Esports World Cup, and he took the hype and views along with him

    The copy-paste combo crisis

Fatal Fury devs are aware they need more content. And this may have led to some rushed DLC. I interviewed Producer Shinya Tamaki and Director Hayato Konya ahead of Evo Las Vegas 2026, and they appeared quite confident that their DLC fighters were high quality, intentional, and sure to bring back fans they had lost after a year of very few updates.

The flood of content looks amazing on a roadmap, but the hype hits a wall when the actual gameplay starts feeling repetitive.

I am not personally under the impression that they intentionally made fighters lazy or repetitive to keep up this crazy content schedule, but veterans in the scene seem to believe this. And they know more than me.

Fighting game legend Christopher “NYChrisG” Gonzalez recently pointed out a glaring flaw that has a lot of competitive players nodding in agreement. The problem with Fatal Fury right now is that despite the growing roster, the characters feel incredibly samey under the hood.

Im seeing alot of talk on the new fatal fury dlc. 10 characters in one year. Impressive right? That means more people will play right?
The problem with fatal fury, is every character feels almost exactly the same, +/- a few options. +2 into button into ex ex plus on block rinse…

    — Chris G (@NYChrisG) July 16, 2026

The universal mechanics are so dominant that every character defaults to the exact same game plan. You just do your plus-on-block button, loop into an EX move, and repeat. Maybe you get a command grab, maybe you get an uppercut, but the core flowchart never changes.

Since Kenshiro dropped, the community has basically watched the exact same combo video posted hundreds of times. The game simply lacks sauce. It is missing that unique flavor, creative swag, and distinct character expression that makes a fighting game truly exciting to watch at a high level.

    The Street Fighter comparison trap

Whenever a critique like this drops, the immediate defensive reflex for longtime FGC fans is to point across the street and yell about the competition. A tournament organizer in the scene noticed this exact pattern playing out, with fans immediately deflecting by saying Street Fighter 6 has the same issue.

People responding to this with ''well so is SF6!'' as far as the samey gameplay criticism is concerned aren't really selling COTW as an alternative.
And what's sad is that this has been going on since forever with SNK fans. Instead of selling you on their games (most prominently… https://t.co/63EqJjGbf4

    — MundoSD (Angelo/アンジェロ) (@MundoMTG) July 16, 2026

But trying to bring down Street Fighter 6 is a terrible way to pitch City of the Wolves as a viable alternative. Deflecting does not fix the fact that the current balance and match results are showing a loop that just isn’t engaging to play.

Street Fighter 6 undeniably has vastly more sauce. The characters in that game have distinct, expressive identities that change how the game is played, which is a major reason why it dominates the spotlight.

Literally nobody knows what sauce means. Then again most of the people commenting dont know english…….. it is what it is LOL. But it is 100% a fact that sf6 has 10x more sauce than cotw. Arguing that just shows a persons bias. https://t.co/RqVNDmqxN3

    — Chris G (@NYChrisG) July 17, 2026

Sauce is a FGC term that points to a fighting game’s roster depth. Are the characters, including movesets and combos, unique? Can you style on opponents with them? Are they just f***ing cool?

In that sense, sauce is a matter of opinion in a sense. While it’s a fact that some fighting games have more repetitive movesets and character styles than others, it’s definitely an opinion on which characters feel cool and fun to play. For example, I’d say Soul Calibur has way more sauce than Street Fighter 6.

To me, Street Fighter 6 feels a bit stiff. I mean, what’s more saucy than Voldo doing a backstroke onto enemies and then thrusting them into the air and then spinning around them like a wheel and exploding? In all seriousness, Soul Calibur’s characters all feel very different and stay true to their own unique styles and weapons. And you can pull off some insanely awesome stuff once you learn them.

However, many people think Street Fighter has the sauce. There are plenty of characters that have a lot of mixups and wild combo options. However, plenty would argue that Fatal Fury has the sauce as well, thanks to its REV system, but I would call it more technical and skilled than saucy.

In fact, I think Fatal Fury is more technical than Street Fighter. There’s plenty of debate over whether Fatal Fury is more advanced and requires more skill. But that doesn’t necessarily mean all the characters feel different. Unique. And I would definitely argue that it’s likely difficult to make all of the characters feel completely different from one another when you’re releasing so many while attempting to keep the game balanced and competitive.

    Roster bloat versus roster depth

This leaves Fatal Fury in a tricky spot. Having 10 DLC characters in a single year is an impressive milestone, but the quality of the design has to match the quantity of the drops. If the upcoming fighters do not bring radically different mechanics to the table, the game will continue to struggle to catch fire in the broader community.

Roster numbers look great on a store page, but if every new fighter just plays the exact same system loop, the player base is going to tune out.

Until SNK injects some genuine variety and flair into the actual gameplay, the game will remain in the shadow of the giants. Street Fighter 6 has massive numbers – both viewership and registration – compared to Fatal Fury. And with more fighting game titles coming out than ever before, where does this leave Fatal Fury? Will it get buried if it can’t stand out?

This is likely why devs are rushing out new content. And I don’t blame them. But I hope all the effort isn’t for nothing.
