The number of players who have played the VR mode of Resident Evil 4 Remake has roughly doubled in one year, according to Capcom’s online statistics.
FACTS
Capcom is collecting online statistics for Resident Evil 4 (2023), including the number of PSVR 2 players and the percentage of PSVR 2 players out of the total number of players on PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC, and other platforms where the remake is available.
The data survey is voluntary and therefore does not include all players who have played Resident Evil 4.
Below are some interesting numbers from Capcom’s statistics, interspersed with notable events in the sales history of PSVR 2.
- The VR mode for Resident Evil 4 was released on December 8, 2023, exclusively for PSVR 2. It is considered one of the best exclusive VR gaming experiences on Playstation VR 2.
- In March 2024, the statistic passed the 100,000 VR players mark with a VR user percentage of 1.57 percent, as reported by MIXED.
- In July 2024, the price of the Playstation VR 2 was significantly reduced for a short time in the USA and the UK.
- In August 2024, Sony introduced the PC adapter for Playstation VR 2.
- A longer global discount followed from Black Friday 2024 to early January 2025.
- In the course of December 2024, the 2 percent mark was exceeded. The statistics showed more than 160,000 VR players.
- At the beginning of February 2025, there were 183,000 VR players and the VR user percentage was 2.13 percent.
- At the beginning of March 2025, Sony permanently lowered the price of the Playstation VR 2.
- For months, the statistics did not provide any more recent data than the February data. Recently, the stats were updated again. On April 18th, the number of VR players was just under 200,000 and the VR user percentage was 2.18 percent.
- The number of VR players has thus roughly doubled since March 2024, while the VR user percentage has risen from 1.57 percent to 2.18 percent.
- Capcom has announced that more than 9 million copies of Resident Evil 4 Remake have been sold as of December 19, 2024. 2.18 percent equals about 200,000 players.
CONTEXT
Comparison with RE7: PSVR 1 still beats PSVR 2
These are the numbers, which of course can be interpreted in different ways.
What is clear is that the Playstation VR 2 still lags far behind the first Playstation VR, at least when compared to RE7’s stats.
Resident Evil 7, released in early 2017 with a VR mode for the first Playstation VR, performed much better than Resident Evil 4, reaching 100,000 VR players in less than two weeks. However, the hype was much bigger at the time, as PSVR was a novelty and Resident Evil 7 was released simultaneously for traditional platforms and VR.
Eight years later, Capcom’s online statistics show 1.24 million Resident Evil 7 VR players. Figures that Resident Evil 4 and Playstation VR 2 will probably never reach.
Capcom does not provide comparable figures for Resident Evil Village’s VR mode.
