I have spent hundreds of hours in the Paldea region, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that Dark type Pokémon are the ultimate gatekeepers. Whether you are staring down a massive Kingambit in a ranked match or trying to take down a 6 star Tera Raid boss, these shadowy threats can ruin your day if you do not have the right math on your side. Most guides just tell you to use a Fighting move and call it a day, but I want to dive into the technical details that actually make the difference between a win and a faint.
The Standard Three Weaknesses and the 4x Danger Zone
At their core, Dark types have a simple defensive profile, but the dual typing in Scarlet and Violet creates some terrifying traps. Dark Pokémon are completely immune to Psychic moves, so do not even try it. To really hurt them, you generally need these three types:
- Fighting moves
- Bug moves
- Fairy moves
However, I have noticed that people often forget about 4x weaknesses. If you see a Kingambit (Dark/Steel) or a Tyranitar (Dark/Rock), a single Fighting move will deal massive damage because both of those dual types are 4x weak to Fighting. On the flip side, some Pokémon like Skuntank are only weak to Ground because their Poison typing covers the usual Dark vulnerabilities. If you want to master these matchups, you should check out my ultimate guide to Fighting type Pokemon weaknesses and tactics to see how to maximize that offensive pressure.
The Hidden Math of Tera Raid Shields
One thing I found that almost every other guide misses is the exact penalty you face during high level raids. If you are using the new Stellar Tera type thinking it is a straight upgrade, you might be accidentally throwing the match. In 5 star and 6 star raids, the boss will eventually put up a shield that changes the damage math entirely.
The damage multipliers against a raid shield look like this:
- If you are not Terastallized: You only deal 20 percent of your normal damage.
- If you are Terastallized but use a move that does not match your Tera type: You deal 35 percent of your damage.
- If you are Terastallized and use a move that matches your Tera type: You deal 75 percent of your damage.
I have seen so many trainers use the Stellar Tera type and get stuck because only Stellar type moves like Tera Blast count as matching. If you use a regular Fighting move while in Stellar form, you only hit for 35 percent damage against that shield. This is why I always recommend sticking to a matching Tera type like Fairy or Fighting for raids.
The Secret Cave Locations in Area Zero
I was so frustrated trying to find Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant until I discovered the exact spatial pathing required. These Paradox Pokémon only spawn in one specific hidden cavern in the Great Crater of Paldea, and if you do not know the landmark, you will walk right past it.
Here is how I find them every time:
- Warp to Research Station 3 and walk out the front door.
- Look to your left and head toward the massive tree near the waterfall.
- Look for a pile of boulders along the rock wall that looks like a dead end.
- There is a tiny gap between the rocks that you can squeeze through.
Once you are inside, you will see a massive cavern with a circular symbol on the ground. This is the only place these two spawn naturally. If you want to see them everywhere, I suggest eating a sandwich with Level 3 Encounter Power for Fairy (for Iron Valiant) or Dragon (for Roaring Moon).
Why the Treasures of Ruin are Paldea’s Anti Heroes
I love the lore in this game, especially the Treasures of Ruin. Wo Chien, Chien Pao, Ting Lu, and Chi Yu are not just random monsters: they are objects that came to life because of human emotions. They are based on the Four Perils from Chinese mythology, and their backstory is actually a tragedy about a greedy king who lived in Paldea long ago.
I find it fascinating that these Pokémon are actually considered anti heroes by some historians in the game. They were born from the resentment of people who suffered under a tyrant, and they destroyed the king’s castle as an act of vengeance before being sealed away. This is a level of depth you just do not get from reading a basic type chart. These four are also the first Pokémon in history to have their base stats adjusted by a literal game patch to keep the competitive meta from breaking.
Economic Mastery and Item Printer RNG Seeds
Building a counter team is expensive. I have spent millions of League Points (LP) just on TMs. For example, a single TM for Dark Pulse or Crunch costs 8,000 LP and requires materials from Zorua or Maschiff. While you can farm these by doing raids, the most efficient way to get rich and find rare Poké Balls is the Item Printer in the Blueberry Academy club room.
I have discovered that the Item Printer is not entirely random. Technical players have found that you can manipulate the internal clock of your Switch to get specific seeds. For example, if you set your clock to December 27, 2056, at 13:02:00, you can trigger a seed that yields Sport Balls, Dream Balls, Safari Balls, and even a Master Ball.
If you are playing in Regulation G, you already know that Incineroar is the king of the mountain. It currently has a massive 54 percent usage rate because its Dark typing makes it the perfect switch in against Shadow Rider Calyrex. I have found that Kingambit is the other major threat you need to prepare for. Its ability, Supreme Overlord, gives it a 10 percent power boost for every fainted ally on your team.
To beat these top tier threats, I usually rely on these strategies:
- Use a Pokémon with the Defiant ability to punish Incineroar’s Intimidate.
- Bring a bulky Fairy type like Tinkaton to resist their Dark moves while hitting back for super effective damage.
- Watch out for Sucker Punch: it is a priority move that hits like a truck, but it only works if you are also using an attacking move.
Whether you are exploring the crater or climbing the ranked ladder, understanding these deeper mechanics is what will give you the edge. If you are also interested in boss mechanics for other games, my ultimate guide to every Elden Ring boss and how to crush them applies the same level of technical analysis to the Lands Between.
