The newly released anime, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, has quickly captured the attention of many anime viewers. It tells the story of a hero party consisting of mage Frieren, hero Himmel, priest Heiter, and warrior Eisen, who, after a decade of fighting, finally defeat the demon king and return home before disbanding. But Frieren ages at a far slower pace and has to witness the aging and eventual passing of each of her companions.

Updated February 17, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Frieren season 2 is proving to be just as brilliant as its predecessor, and it is comfortably the best anime of Winter 2026. Honestly, it might end up being the year’s greatest show, although I hope that, somehow, something even better comes out, as it would have to be a masterpiece.

Secrets of the Silent Witch
Who Doesn’t Love An Unassuming OP Mage?
Here is an absolutely brilliant 2025 anime for anyone who, specifically, loves Frieren’s portrayal. Secrets of the Silent Witch is quite different in most areas, but its protagonist comes across like a shier version of the beloved elf. Monica Everett is an absolute powerhouse mage who can decimate an army of dragons with a single spell. Similar to Frieren, she is soft-spoken, humble, doesn’t want attention, prefers to be alone, and hides an absurd strength that positions her among the most powerful characters in her universe.
Now, unlike Frieren, Monica’s personality is framed by her social anxiety, as she mostly avoids people due to her fear of talking. In fact, she mastered silent spellcasting just so she wouldn’t have to talk in public. That is a level of dedication that Frieren would appreciate. Secrets of the Silent Witch centers around a magic school where Monica is sent to protect a prince, a situation that forces her to build connections that she initially did not want.
Delicious In Dungeon
A Brilliant Fantasy Anime That Can Rival Frieren In Most Areas
Airing alongside Frieren‘s opening season, Delicious in Dungeon was not an instant hit like its contemporary, but rather a slow-burning success story that gradually turned into one of 2024’s best shows. Both anime take place in gorgeous fantasy worlds that seem to take some inspiration from tabletop RPGs, and they revolve around parties who are on a specific mission. While Frieren’s group is retracing the elf’s past, Delicious in Dungeon‘s heroes are delving deeper into a sprawling dungeon, all in the hope of finding the dragon that ate one of their members.
While they are ultimately quite different, these two series work perfectly as companion pieces that scratch the same itch, albeit in unique ways. Delicious in Dungeon starts with a relatively lighthearted tone, but it is overall much darker than Frieren, although it maintains an optimistic tone throughout its entire run. Trigger’s animation is near-flawless, too.
Mushi-Shi
A Rare Iyashikei Supernatural Anime
Trading fantasy for the supernatural, Mushi-Shi arguably comes the closest to replicating Frieren‘s tone. Ginko travels across Japan in search of stories that might suggest the presence of Mushi, supernatural entities that exist beyond humanity but can also influence humans. Mostly an observer, but also willing to get involved if the situation calls for it, Ginko is a surrogate for the audience, serving as their eyes and ears into a world that is both familiar and alien.
While their settings are nothing alike, Mushi-Shi and Frieren are both fantastic iyashikei anime that revolve around characters who travel from area to area. Mushi-Shi is even more slow-paced than Frieren, but it is just as captivating.
Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions
A More Grounded Isekai Anime That Focuses On A Party

However, as the years go by and the people become more self-sufficient, Holo is reduced to nothing more than a special spectator in the town, more or less a folktale of what once was.
Holo’s days of spectating come to an end when she proposes to the traveling merchant Kraft, who happens to stop by, to become his business partner if he helps her go to her northern home, Yoitsu. Kraft recognizes her skills and agrees to fulfill her request, and the agreement kickstarts the beginning of their many adventures.
Similar to Frieren, Spice and Wolf focuses quite a bit on the quieter moments in an adventure, all the while shining a spotlight on its main relationship.

A Doctor’s Introspective Journey
Fairies Albums follows the life of a powerful spirit doctor widely famous in the spiritual world of the Yaogaui. While everyone knows of her prowess, very few know what she actually looks like. Traveling the world to help those in need of her services, she is accompanied by a young monk and a demon in the form of a man.
The series is similar to Frieren in that Freiren recounts her adventures on a journey that lets her relive them, while Fairies Album follows the various adventures of the spirit doctor in real-time, making it an even more thrilling experience.
