Summer Game Fest has officially kicked off for 2026, bringing with it an endless stream of video game news, from demo drops to developer deep dives and a boatload of trailers for games you may not even have known you needed until you saw them in the show. Alas, regardless of the many eye-catching reveals vying for your precious attention, there’s one game from this year’s announcements list you should not miss, and that’s AION 2.

MMO fans may remember AION as a beloved high-fantasy RPG that launched back in 2008. Set in the beautiful but fractured world of Atreia, players were dropped into the chaos and left to defend themselves through intense bouts of aerial combat in a sprawling open world. Neither a remaster nor a remake, AION 2 delivers a fresh, heart-pounding adventure for MMO-lovers to immerse themselves in, set 200 years after the events of the original game. Built from the ground up yet paying homage to its roots, NC has carefully curated a wholly new experience jam-packed with enthralling missions and plenty of lore to uncover.

The backbone of AION 2 is the world itself, which is an incredible 36 times larger than the original. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Atreia’s aesthetic evolution sees iconic locations like the pastoral glades of Poeta and the haunting coasts of Ishalgen shine thanks to a revitalised look. While I could wax lyrical about the large-scale changes that make AION 2 so enticing to explore, it’s the finer details that really make the world sing. Piles of castle rubble slump against creaking walls, and craggy rock stalagmites shoot up from the earth like threatening organic spears. There’s abstract beauty hiding all over Atreia’s labyrinthine world, and you can find just as much joy by slowing down and taking in the sights as you can by swiping away at enemies.

Naturally, it helps that there are so many ways to investigate the world. Whether you like to walk or prefer the company of a loyal steed, there are a multitude of options to get around with while pilfering through Atriea’s many points of interest. In addition to scouring the earth, you can also swim deep into watery graves and whizz through the sky. This kind of freedom lets you take a fine-tooth comb to each environment, encouraging you to look behind every suspicious shrub and beyond dubious cliff faces in search of tasty loot and lore.

Beyond worldbuilding, one of the most important aspects of any MMORPG is roleplaying, the key to which lies in character customisation. Naturally, it should come as no surprise that AION 2 has an answer for that as well. Its in-depth character creator allows you to mould your warrior into existence as if you’re a Renaissance painter crafting your finest work. A collection of sliders enables you to get granular and tweak each aspect of their physical presence, from nose shape to height and even neck size, if you can believe it. Whether you want a fringe, purple highlights, or even asymmetrical irises, AION 2’s dizzying pool of options guarantees your virtual hero will look and feel unique in motion. And yet, there’s more. On top of physical features, there are over 200 customisation features you can adorn your fighter with, and that’s before we get to the Style Shop, which enables players to curate custom looks and share them through the official site.

It doesn’t end there, though, and there is one more aspect to consider when beginning your journey, and that’s your Class. There are eight options available, with your decision dictating not only your damage and defence stats but also what kind of role you’ll play within AION 2’s intricate world. There are tanky Gladiators and Templars, fast but deadly Assassins and Rangers, mystical Clerics, Sorcerers and Spiritmasters, and the all-rounders in the Chanter class. Your choice here deepens roleplaying opportunities as the overarching story unfolds, allowing you to feel like a fully fleshed-out digital warrior.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of AION 2 is its combat, which is fast, real-time, and entirely in your hands. Thanks to the ongoing faction war at its core, fighting in AION 2 ranges from nail-biting 1v1 bouts to thrilling 4v4 arena battles to large-scale, earth-swallowing realm-on-realm warfare across all of Atreia. Once engaged, you’ll need to read the room, dodging, repositioning and chaining attacks to take them out, with flight adding enticing complexity to each standoff. Notably, unlike other heavy hitters of the genre, there’s no auto-combat to speak of, and so success comes down to your own skill. Read the fight well, and the wins feel earned; misjudge it, and you’ll learn fast.

With so many dream features, AION 2 feels like the MMORPG we’ve long been waiting for. From its intense aerial combat to the rich character creator and enthralling new story, NC has crafted an experience unlike anything we’ve seen so far. After already making waves in Korea and Taiwan, there’s no reason this fantasy adventure shouldn’t be on your Wishlist, ready for when it launches on PC in September this year.
