Updated on October 7, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Good news! Fall 2026 has two gender-bender anime, as Ranma ½ and A Wild Last Boss Appeared! are both airing new episodes! I’ve updated this article with new headings, images, and removed some of the fat.
Although not inescapable, gender-bender anime are more common than you might think, and the idea appears in far more series than just Ranma ½. Occasionally, a comedy anime flips the protagonist’s gender for an episode or two to get quick laughs; however, those series aren’t the focus of this article, as I want to talk about true gender-bender anime.
Even though anime has already thoroughly explored gender-bending, new shows keep popping up every year. The concept is simply too fun to completely ignore. But which gender-bender anime are the best? Are any of them worth watching? Well, the answer is mostly yes, with a few caveats.
Here are a few criteria and notes:
- Body-swapping anime will be included as long as the characters are of opposite genders and the story focuses on that element.
- The most common transition is men turning into women (or boys into girls), but the reverse happens occasionally.
- Reincarnation anime that involve characters being reborn as the opposite gender will not be considered unless it’s a unique situation.
- That said, some isekai anime will be included if the story doesn’t use conventional reincarnation or if it warrants a mention for another reason.

When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl Hints At Being Interesting
An Otaku Becomes A Bagel Girl
Based on a webtoon/manhwa, When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl didn’t leave much of an impression during its initial run. First, the series aired all its episodes in a single week, which isn’t an ideal release schedule because it doesn’t fit into a seasonal lineup. More importantly, the anime is difficult to find and has a somewhat tarnished reputation. With that in mind, should you skip this one?
Honestly, yes and no.
When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl follows Bong Gi, an otaku who, overall, isn’t great or charismatic. One day, he randomly wakes up as an attractive woman, granting him a new lease on life. Before long, he befriends a woman (and develops a crush on her), gets a job, and reunites with a person he hates from his past.
When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl has a couple of things in its favor, including a pretty interesting dynamic between the protagonist and his female friend. The story also tries to offer a few surprises rather than sticking to a slice-of-life comedy, and the second half differs quite a bit from the first. While not a huge, huge focus, Bong’s psychological struggle with his transformation is somewhat explored.
Should You Watch When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl?
When I Woke Up I Became a Bagel Girl has good ideas, but struggles to bring them all together. While I recommend trying it, Bong might be too much of a wall for some folks.

Kämpfer Is Stupid, But Not In A Bad Way
Forgettable Fluff That Is Mostly Passable But Struggles To Leave An Impression
Kämpfer is one of those anime that, while enjoyable, probably won’t stick in a viewer’s mind for long. The series does not excel in any area, delivering middling action, serviceable humor, and inoffensive characters, all things that combine to create an experience that goes in one ear and out the other. Just to be clear, nothing is wrong with fluff as long as it is entertaining. Kämpfer is just fun enough to warrant a recommendation, even if it is nowhere near the best gender-bender anime ever.
Essentially, Natsuru becomes a magical girl, albeit one who fights with other chosen girls rather than evil monsters. While this situation leads to a couple of notable fights, it mostly culminates in comedic high jinks as Natsuru tries to fit in at school while keeping his dual gender a secret. The story doesn’t build much momentum, and it kind of peters out at the end; still, Kämpfer is a decent watch.
Should You Watch Kämpfer?
Yeah, Kämpfer is just dumb fun, nothing more and nothing less.

Cinderella Boy Is A Mostly Forgotten Gender-Bender Anime
Body-Sharing Anime Detectives
Based on a one-shot manga by Monkey Punch, the author behind Lupin the Third, Cinderella Boy feels like a fusion of multiple classics. Besides sharing similarities with Lupin‘s character designs and humor, the male lead is named Ranma, a pretty obvious reference to the most famous gender-bender anime character of all time. The concept is fairly interesting. Two detectives, Ranma and a woman named Rella, get in an accident and are “saved” by a doctor who puts them into the same body. Each day, one person and their associated body come out, swapping at midnight.
Cinderella Boy is a unique gender-bender since Ranma and Rella are presented as different people inhabiting the same body. Technically, they are not swapping genders but instead sharing real estate and time. The 2003 anime is the definition of a mixed bag that never comes close to matching the brilliance of its inspirations. That said, the show has decent comedy and a few fun action sequences.
Should You Watch Cinderella Boy?
If you can find it, sure. Cinderella Boy is by no means great, and one could argue it isn’t even good. However, it has one of the more interesting gender-bender premises.

Space Pirate Mito Is A One-of-a-Kind Gender-Bender Anime
The MC Changes His Gender Halfway Through, And It Sticks
A mostly forgotten ’90s anime, despite its Crunchyroll availability, Space Pirate Mito does something that separates it from every other gender-bender anime: the protagonist’s gender changes halfway through the 26-episode run. The change is permanent, too, so it isn’t just a short 2–3 episode arc. Let me explain.
Aoi learns that his mother is actually a space pirate who’s being hunted by the Galactic Patrol. Aoi learns that he isn’t fully human and that his mother’s species is essentially genderless until maturity. At the end of the season, Aoi unlocks his true power to save the universe, transforming into a girl in the process (and becoming the Queen of the Galaxy). The moment isn’t played for laughs or quickly fixed early in the next season; instead, Aoi must adapt to his new gender while handling important duties and threats.
Space Pirate Mito deserves props for having the courage to take a route no other anime seems willing to explore. After the gender-bender transformation, the show doesn’t change Aoi’s main love interest; instead, it explores a queer romance. We see Aoi explore his new form, and his love interest, Mutsuki, must confront her feelings.
Should You Watch Space Pirate Mito?
Considering all of the above, you might be wondering why Space Pirate Mito ranks this low. Well, what we got here is a perfect example of a narratively ambitious and, arguably, significant show that also isn’t great. Despite its progressive ideas, this anime is very much of its era, which means monsters of the week, an art style that hasn’t aged well, and an unwillingness to stick to a consistent tone. Space Pirate Mito isn’t a failure by any means, but it isn’t a success either. Give it a try, but don’t expect a masterpiece.

A Wild Last Boss Appeared is the most predictable overpowered MC isekai anime ever, and that is both a strength and a weakness. On the one hand, if you are remotely familiar with these types of stories (or have watched Overlord), this series probably won’t have many surprises; however, its one real innovation is the protagonist. OP female MCs are fairly rare in the genre, and that goes double for ones who were men in their previous lives.
A Wild Last Boss Appeared‘s Lufas is also far more powerful than nearly all her companions, and she knows that “battles” are nothing more than slaughter. By the numbers, this anime is nevertheless entertaining. The animation is rock-solid, and Lufas manages to be both likable and arrogant at the same time. While not constant, the action is vicious and memorable, complementing the world-building and characters. Ultimately, this Fall 2025 anime is for die-hard isekai fans, and they should check out season 2.
Should You Watch A Wild Last Boss Appeared!?
If you like isekai anime with absurdly overpowered protagonists, A Wild Last Boss Appeared! is an above-average option.

Maze: The Mega-Burst Space Is A Product Of Its Time
The Most ’90s Anime Ever
Now, here is an oldie but a goodie, at least for people who enjoy over-the-top comedy in the vein of something like Slayers. Admittedly, Maze: The Mega-Burst Space does not reach the same heights as that show, but it is still an enjoyable romp that throws seemingly everything at the wall to see what sticks. An isekai fantasy comedy mecha anime, Maze is a messy, silly, and “of its era” production that, while not amazing, has a ’90s charm.
The protagonist, Maze, has a pretty strange and awkward backstory. During the day, they are in female form; during the night, they become male. Now, this transformation is not just physical but also comes with a significant personality change. These forms are (effectively and literally) different people, which is quite unusual for a gender-bender anime.
Should You Watch Maze: The Mega-Burst Space?
Maze: The Mega-Burst Space has ’90s charm, although it isn’t among the decade’s better series. Still, it is a decent enough adventure comedy.

Magical Girl Ore Is Not Your Average Mahou Shoujo Anime
A Magical Girl Gender-Bender Twist That Has Decent Moments And Uneven Humor
.jpg?q=49&fit=crop&w=416&h=346&dpr=2)
Magical girl anime parodies aren’t hard to come by, and some are great. While it slips into some other genres and themes, Is This a Zombie? is consistently hilarious; meanwhile, Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! is a fun comedy that pokes fun at classic mahou shoujo tropes.
Surprisingly (or not), two magical girl anime incorporate a gender-bender twist, and both are of somewhat equal quality. Magical Girl Ore centers around a female protagonist who transforms into a buff dude when she becomes a magical girl. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Saki decides to become a magical girl to save her love interest. To her surprise, she transforms into a very masculine guy, all the while still wearing the traditional magical girl outfit.
Magical Girl Ore is a strange case; its selling point, the whole female-to-male transformation, is its weakest element. The humor during these moments mostly boils down to gender stereotypes, and Saki’s personality shifts from enjoyably silly to annoyingly bland when she is a guy. Still, the anime has some interesting points, including a fun supporting cast (including another magical girl).
Should You Watch Magical Girl Ore?
Magical girl fans should give this one a try, as it is at least a different take on the theme.

Gonna Be The Twin-Tail Smashes Together Gender-Bending And Magical Girls
A Guy With An Appreciation For Pigtails Becomes A Girl With Pigtails To Protect Other Girls With Pigtails
The other magical girl gender-bender anime, Gonna be the Twin-Tail, is more of a straight-up parody of mahou shoujo tropes than Magical Girl Ore, which is saying something. Because he loves girls with pigtails, Souji is aghast when Twoearle, a woman from another reality, tells him aliens have arrived with plans to steal the hairstyle. Empowered by Twoearle, Souji is granted Tail Gear, allowing him to transform into Tail Red. So yeah, he gets to fight aliens while looking like a petite girl, decked out in sci-fi garb (rather than a conventional magical girl aesthetic).
This probably does not come as a surprise, but Gonna be the Twin-Tail does not take itself seriously. While tame compared to some other shows, the anime focuses heavily on fan service, while delivering fight sequences that are mostly forgettable. Still, the series can be entertaining in a “turn off your brain and watch the silliness” type of way, as long as nobody goes in expecting a deep story or particularly nuanced characters.
Should You Watch Gonna Be The Twin-Tail!!?
Magical girl fans should give this one a try, as it is at least a different take on the theme. Wait, does anybody else feel a sense of deja vu?

More often than not, isekai stories barely acknowledge the protagonists’ previous lives, even in the few cases when they reincarnate in the opposite gender. Consequently, From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated sets itself apart from the crowd by prominently featuring Kenzaburou.
After getting hit by a truck, the middle-aged dad wakes up as Grace, the big bad of an otome game his daughter played. Although he is an otaku, Kenzaburou isn’t particularly into this genre, and he has no experience with this game, so he is significantly out of his depth. Since he is not great at being either evil or a teenage girl, the MC decides his best option is to rely on his parental instincts and experience.
From Bureaucrat to Villainess emphasizes Kenzaburou’s previous life, with his wife and child having their own side story in the real world. He is also not living out his dream life or OP fantasy, and he constantly acts in ways that highlight the fact that he is a guy in his mid-50s. The anime works beautifully as a parody of villainess isekai anime, but it is also effective as a gender-bender story.
Should You Watch From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated!?
For sure. Although it loses a bit of steam in its second half, From Bureaucrat to Villainess: Dad’s Been Reincarnated! is a funny isekai anime with a great protagonist.

Life With An Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into A Total Fantasy Knockout Is Better Than It Sounds
An Isekai Gender-Bender Adventure With Romance At Its Heart
Fun as most of them can be, isekai anime often seem allergic to the mere concept of originality or novelty. Most shows are happy to repeat the same old tropes with almost no variety, a choice that enhances their mainstream appeal and their forgettability. For all its flaws, Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout is at the very least memorable, and that comes down to its unique setup.
Two lifelong friends, Hinata and Tsukasa, are sent to a fantasy world by a goddess and tasked with defeating the demon lord. If that was not already hard enough, Hinata is also transformed into a girl who can magically charm almost anyone, a power that threatens to take their friendship with Tsukasa in an unexpected direction. Total Fantasy Knockout is, unsurprisingly, a comedy that, while not regularly hilarious, is frequently amusing.
Should You Watch Life With An Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated Into A Total Fantasy Knockout?
A decent isekai but a good gender-bender anime. Yes, watch it.
