June 5, 2026 – Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has acquired spatial augmented reality (AR) company Illumix, according to reporting from Variety.
Under the deal, Snap will adopt Illumix’s technology and platform as it continues work on its Specs glasses. Variety reported that Snap will also retain most of Illumix’s staff.
Illumix was founded in 2017 by CEO Kirin Sinha with a focus on AR products that connect digital content with real-world environments. The company co-developed an AR version of Five Nights at Freddy’s, which launched in 2019, and has also worked on bringing AI into physical spaces, including technology focused on changing environments.
Snap’s interest in Illumix was linked to the company’s work on scaling mapping technology for real-world experiences, according to Variety’s report. The acquisition will give Snap this additional mapping technology and staff as it develops Specs and continues building its AR hardware and software efforts.
Snap launched Specs Inc., a standalone subsidiary focused on AR glasses, in January this year. The company will be exhibiting at Augmented World Expo (AWE) on June 16 in Long Beach, California, where Snap Co-Founder and CEO, Evan Spiegel, is expected to share more updates on the company’s Specs AR glasses platform.

In its 2026 Q1 Investor Letter, the company stated: “We are excited about the upcoming launch of Specs and our mission to make computing more human. By adding Illumix’s spatial AR and mapping capabilities, the acquisition could support Snap’s work on Specs and its broader AR development ecosystem. Snap did not disclose the value of the transaction.
