January 19, 2026 – Kopin Corporation, a developer of optical systems and microdisplays for defense and enterprise applications, has recently announced a milestone for its DarkWAVE module following the first product order for the platform. Theon International, a provider of night-vision and thermal imaging systems, has placed a USD $1 million development order to bring Kopin’s 960p DarkWAVE module to “production readiness” in 2026.
According to Kopin, the order marks the transition of the technology from a prototype stage to product availability for international defense customers. Based on Kopin’s microdisplay technology, Theon International will develop the “DARK-I,” a next-generation clip-on system featuring augmented reality (AR) and thermal integration capabilities.
DARK-I is designed to integrate with existing models of fielded night vision goggles (NVGs) and will essentially convert traditional NVGs into AR-enabled systems, while also providing the option of thermal integration on top of AR, according to Kopin.
The DARK-I system provides full-color symbology and full-motion digital interlace feeds, such as drone imagery. This is intended to allow soldiers to access an enhanced vision of the battlefield without needing to replace existing night vision goggles that utilize traditional image intensifier tubes.
Kopin stated that the DarkWAVE platform targets an aftermarket opportunity of more than 2 million night-vision goggles currently estimated to be in use globally. The company added that the order, which represents its first significant development order and revenue potential from international defense markets, will bring the 960p OLED DarkWAVE module to design completion and accelerate production readiness to deliver proprietary, ITAR-free products to Theon and other global customers (ITAR, or International Traffic in Arms Regulations, is a set of U.S. government rules controlling the export and import of defense-related articles and technologies).
“DarkWAVE and DARK-I is just the first example of the mutually beneficial relationship between Kopin and Theon,” said Michael Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Kopin. “This development order from Theon accelerates our schedule and brings a standard DarkWAVE product to international customers sooner. Because this system is ITAR-free, it opens new global markets, while deepening our collaboration with Theon.”
