Assassin’s Creed Black Flag isn’t anywhere near the best Assassin’s Creed game in my book, but it’s one of the best pirate games I’ve ever played. Trading in stealth and hidden blades for cannon fusilades and intra-ship combat, it’s the black sheep of Ubisoft’s iconic series. Then again, it wouldn’t be much of a pirate game if it played by the rules now, would it? Rumors of a remake have circulated for months, but we’ve finally got unofficial confirmation thanks to the PEGI ratings board. Drink up, me hearties, there be booty on the horizon.
The PEGI rating shows the remake will be titled Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and that it will include swearing, violence, and in-game purchases. The former two won’t be surprising if you played the original (or indeed any Assassin’s Creed game), but we’ll have to hope the microtransactions are kept to a minimum.
As far as leaks go, this is a pretty strong indication that official news is on the way. With the original game was announced at E3 (remember that?) over 12 years ago, the timing of this rating suggests the remake could be officially unveiled at The Game Awards on Thursday. It’s unclear if that monolith in the desert is particularly piratical, though.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is a beloved, if unusual, entry into the series, and I’m looking forward to looting and plundering my way across the oceans once again in the remake. I haven’t played the game since I was in university, but I’m pretty sure that it’ll hold up to scrutiny in the modern age.
Hoist your sails and make your first mate walk the plank, Black Flag is on the horizon. While there’s no news on a release date, no look at the remastered cutscenes or potentially reimagined gameplay, I don’t think we’ll be waiting long to see more from Ubisoft.
