Overwatch 2 Tank tier list in 2025: Top picks for frontline control

The Tank role in Overwatch 2 is all about absorbing damage, protecting teammates, and effectively managing the battlefield. Any Tank can be useful in normal games, but if you’re thinking of trying to rise through the competitive Overwatch ranks, you’ll need to know which Tank heroes are the best suited for certain situations and which ones are the most effective in the game’s ever-changing meta. 

That’s where our Overwatch tier list comes in. We’ll be ranking all the current Overwatch tanks on a scale of S to D in terms of how well they perform in the game’s competitive scene.

As mentioned, the meta of Overwatch 2 shifts constantly due to tweaks to heroes, such as nerfs and buffs. This means that a Tank hero who might have been effective in various scenarios in the game’s last patch may not be so useful after the most recent updates. 

It can be tricky to keep up to date with all the various changes that heroes get in games like Overwatch 2. Our tier list has been designed to make it easy for you to look through all Overwatch tanks and find the most effective choices in the game’s current state. We also update our tier lists regularly to reflect these changes and keep our information as current as possible. 

Below is a quick rundown of how our Overwatch tier list was compiled. 

Our rankings are based on the most recent patch notes, pro-play trends, and community performance data. One of the main community platforms we use is Mobalytics. Blizzard also has its own Overwatch 2 Hero Stats, so we will be using that to compile our tier list as well. Our rankings will continue to be updated as the meta shifts and evolves, so check back often.

Here is a brief look at all tanks in Overwatch 2 and their position on our tier list as of the game’s 19th season. 

Wrecking Ball has gradually become stronger and stronger as the Overwatch 2 seasons have continued, and he is now firmly in S-Tier. His positioning on our list is mostly due to his impressive dive abilities, which allow him to not only be highly disruptive to the enemy team but also a fun Tank to play. 

He has always had a significant health bar and shields, but a change to his Adaptative Barrier Major Perk has made him even more durable. Well played Wrecking Balls can get behind enemy lines, stand ground on objectives and payloads and deal damage to multiple enemies at once. 

Zarya maintains her position as a strong Overwatch 2 Tank. She has a high ban rate because of this, but if you get a chance to play as her in comp, she can become a domineering force. Her energy beams are almost impossible to avoid when up close, and her Energy Lance Major Perk makes it all the more potent. The Perk allows Zarya to pierce her enemies when she gets to over 50% energy. She can start building her energy by absorbing enemy attacks, so she has huge potential. 

D.Va has also maintained a strong presence in the Overwatch 2 competitive scene. She is a versatile Tank who can brawl, defend and dive. Her current Major Perks – Shield System and Precision Fusion – allow the player to choose whether they want to increase her defences or her offence. 

As well as this, D.Va’s mobility – which has always been a core element of her kit – allows her to traverse the battlefield with ease. She isn’t quite strong enough for S-Tier, but she’s definitely a great choice. 

Winston is another A-Tier Tank whose mobility is a key part of his kit. This, combined with his shield and diving and disruption abilities, allows him to protect his team while picking off enemy supports. His new Minor Perk Barrier Toss increases his status as A-Tier, as it has heightened Winston’s protection skills, allowing him to throw his shield so that he can protect allies that are further away. 

Orisa is a strong Tank in the current Overwatch meta, but she can be vulnerable between cooldowns. Her Protective Barrier Major Perk helps raise her defences, but it isn’t enough to make up for her lack of mobility. That being said, Orisa is excellent at holding her ground and, in certain team comps, she can become a force to be reckoned with thanks to the amount of damage she can dish out. 

Sigma is a solid choice, but he suffers from the same lack of mobility that Orisa does. As a defence Tank, he can be very strong thanks to his Experimental Barrier and his Kinetic Grasp, which absorbs enemy projectiles. If timed well, Sigma can eat projectile ultimates, such as Mei’s Blizzard. While he can be highly effective, the lack of consistency with Sigma places him firmly in B-Tier for now (though he could definitely rise through the ranks). 

Roadhog is very much a niche Tank who is only effective in certain situations or when used by players who have tons of time put into him. He has no utility or shielding for his team, with his kit revolving solely around damage and self-preservation. 

If the enemy team has an Ana, she can counter his self-healing with her Biotic Grenade due to its anti-healing abilities, reducing his effectiveness even more so. His hook is still a viable part of his kit, but it only really works effectively in particular situations, so for now, he has to be C-Tier. 

Reinhardt has seen a significant fall through the tiers due to buffs for other Overwatch heroes and nerfs to his own skills. He is still a great brawler and defence hero who can take down enemies that get too close, especially those with smaller health bars. However, the increase in diving tanks has made him more redundant than ever. Even his shield no longer feels as effective. He can still shine, especially when played by expert Reinhardt players, but for the most part, he just doesn’t have the strength to be any higher on our list. 

Don’t feel disheartened if your favourite Tank is lower on our list. There are no set rules and regulations when it comes to who you can and can’t play, and if you have the skills, then any hero can become a viable choice in any game. Our list is more of a guide to the heroes that are the most effective in a broader range of scenarios in the competitive Overwatch 2 scene.
