What happens when the world’s most trusted search engine starts serving up fiction as fact? And how do you push back when the answer isn’t just wrong, but generated by an algorithm with no memory and no accountability?

There’s a quiet revolution happening in your search bar. Google’s AI Overviews (AIOs), the new summaries that appear above traditional search results, promise instant answers with no need to click further. But what happens when those answers are wrong?

According to Google, AIOs are designed to streamline the search experience. In practice, they’re starting to resemble a liability more than a convenience, especially when it comes to technical subjects like automotive advice.

    1.66 Seconds to 60?

Take the case of the Yamaha YZF-R3, a popular entry-level sport bike. A Reddit user asked Google for its 0-60 time. The AI responded confidently with 1.66 seconds. That would make it faster than a Bugatti Chiron. The actual number is closer to 5.2 seconds. Unless you already knew that, you might walk away thinking your 42-horsepower commuter bike could outrun a McLaren.

And that’s far from the only example.

    Fake Information, Real Consequences

Jalopnik’s recent article exposing AI-generated content revealed a troubling pattern. Google’s AI Overviews have begun sourcing information from YouTube channels that use synthetic voices, stock visuals, and AI-generated scripts to create motorcycle content. These videos mimic legitimate advice but often include factual errors. While Google isn’t necessarily promoting these channels, its AI appears to treat them as reliable sources, surfacing questionable claims in search summaries that appear authoritative at a glance.

This isn’t just about low-effort content. It’s a matter of trust. When Google presents AI-generated summaries alongside or above vetted sources, it can mislead users in ways that are not just frustrating but potentially harmful.

When Bad Info Leads To Bad Repairs

There are dozens of real-world examples. A mechanic on Reddit recalled a customer who brought in a Lincoln Town Car and insisted the head gasket was blown. His evidence? Google’s AI stated that coolant in the spark plug wells indicated the head gasket had failed. However, a failed intake manifold gasket is the more common culprit, except for that engine. The incorrect diagnosis didn’t just cause confusion — it could have led to an expensive and unnecessary repair.

Another user reported that their father continued to drive despite a known head gasket issue, after seeking advice from ChatGPT. The AI said it was fine. It ignored the risks of coolant contamination, oil dilution, and catalytic converter damage, all serious consequences that depend heavily on context.

    Specs, Sizes, and More

The inaccuracies go well beyond engine diagnostics. One user reported that Google’s AI suggested a 4.5-foot truck bed could easily accommodate a 4-by-8 sheet of plywood, apparently because 4.5 is “larger” than 4, ignoring the reality of width and actual cargo space.

Another user selling Jeep axles noted a buyer showed up expecting five-lug wheels. The buyer had checked Google, which confidently gave the wrong bolt pattern. That bolt pattern has never applied to the truck in question.

Other users report tire sizes, curb weights, and gas tank capacities that were either incorrect, misattributed, or a combination of both. Some results mixed trim levels, others confused entirely different vehicles. In some cases, the AI simply invented numbers that did not appear in any linked source.

When AI Crosses the Line Into Defamation

The risks of inaccurate AI-generated answers extend well beyond car advice. In one of the most alarming cases to date, a Minnesota solar company is suing Google for defamation after its AI Overview falsely claimed the state’s attorney general was suing the business for deceptive sales practices.

As first reported by Futurism, the AI confidently presented the claim as fact, citing multiple links to support it. However, none of the sources it referenced actually mentioned the company being sued. Some mentioned legal actions involving other solar firms, but not this one. The AI drew an incorrect conclusion, cited unrelated material, and delivered it as if it were verified.

This type of error, where the AI fabricates a claim and presents it as credible, raises serious questions about accountability. When misinformation like this appears in a Google-branded result, the potential harm to reputation or business can be immediate and difficult to reverse.

    The Price of Progress

It’s tempting to dismiss these errors as the cost of innovation. AI Overviews promise speed and convenience—answers without the hassle of searching, reading, or verifying. But that convenience comes at a deeper cost. It can rob us of understanding and discovery, and, according to a recent MIT study, even reduce how deeply we engage with new information.

The real danger isn’t just bad answers. It’s that companies like Google are reshaping the entire information ecosystem while sidestepping responsibility for the consequences. When AI Overviews deliver false or defamatory claims, users are left to deal with the fallout alone. There’s no transparent correction process, no editorial chain of accountability, and often no way to prove what was said—especially when the output changes with every refresh.

Yes, you can report an AI Overview for being incorrect. But for all the good it does, the burden still falls on the user to spot the error, document it, and hope someone at Google eventually responds.

This is more than just “user beware.” It marks a fundamental shift in who holds responsibility for truth. When a journalist or publisher gets it wrong, there are standards, reputations, and legal systems in place to address it. With AI-generated answers, those guardrails disappear. The sources are often invisible, the errors untraceable, and the harm potentially irreversible.

Google isn’t just indexing the web anymore. It’s laundering synthetic content—pulling from questionable forums, low-quality videos, and AI-written posts, then packaging it as authoritative fact. And the more we rely on it, the more we lose the habit of questioning, verifying, or even noticing when something’s off.

Convenience has a cost. And it may be far higher than we realize.
