Dragon Ranger Gaming began VCT Threshold China by beating Rare Atom 2-0 on the opening day. The win keeps alive their bid to return to the league through one of the event's 2027 places.
The best-of-three Week 1 meeting started at 12:00 UK time. THE HUB Performing Arts Center is hosting the event, which runs until 1 November.
The result went against the rankings. Dragon Ranger Gaming are rated 1461 on Elo, ranking them 208th, with a 49-54 record from 103 rated matches. Rare Atom sat at rank 74, rated 1622, with a 22-11 record in 33 matches.
Rare Atom picked Summit in the veto and Dragon Ranger Gaming chose Lotus. Sunset was left as the decider but was never needed. Summit took 46 minutes, and Dragon Ranger Gaming needed 48 minutes to finish the job on Lotus.
A guest place is now the route back into VCT China
The stakes are high for Dragon Ranger Gaming. The team held a VCT China guest slot but was not chosen as one of the region’s partners for 2027-2028, Sheep Esports reported. VCT China will have eight partner teams instead of ten in that cycle. Partner status has been removed from four teams: FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club and Wolves Esports.
In China, Valorant Challengers has given way to Threshold, which now brings the Nationals season to a close. The 2027 China Kickoff will feature eight partner teams, two visitor teams and two teams from the Open Qualifier.
The Week 1 bracket includes five VCT China teams and seven national teams. Its winner takes a VCT China place for 2027. Week 1 runs from 21 to 25 October as a single-elimination best-of-three bracket. Week 2 follows from 27 October to 1 November.
Rare Atom are not out yet. Week 1 losers drop into a Week 2 playoff, joined by one extra national team.
The win ends a poor run before Threshold
The sweep followed a difficult stretch for Dragon Ranger Gaming. Their previous match was a 0-2 loss to Any Questions Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 3 2026. Before that, they lost 1-2 to both Trace Esports and TEC Esports in VCT China Stage 2 2026. In the same stage they beat Wolves Esports and JD Gaming, both 2-1.
The win also repeats their last meeting with Rare Atom. Dragon Ranger Gaming won that match 3-0 at VCT Ascension China 2025 on 19 October 2025. Rare Atom came into Shanghai off a 0-2 defeat to JD Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 1 2026.

The other first-round matches also ended in sweeps. Unsettled Resentment beat Octagonal Disposition Gaming 2-0. Any Questions Gaming beat World Sports Invictus Gaming 2-0. Wolves Esports, another team that has lost its partner slot, beat A Team 2-0.
Next up for Dragon Ranger Gaming is FunPlus Phoenix on Friday 23 October. The Week 1 semi-finals are scheduled for 24 October, with the Week 1 final on 25 October.
