What’s the story?
Kopin Corporation has secured a USD $18.6 million sole-source US government award to develop two more MicroLED displays for ground soldier equipment and pilot head-up displays.
Why it matters
The US government award lets Kopin accelerate onshoring of its MicroLED manufacturing so display components for defense and commercial systems are designed and built in the United States.
The bigger picture
The award takes Kopin’s total US government IBAS funding to $34 million as it works to expand its position as a “trusted, critical technology supplier” of visual and optical components.
October 15, 2026 – Kopin Corporation, a developer of microdisplays and head-mounted display systems for defense, enterprise, and consumer products, has recently announced that it has secured a USD $18.6 million sole-source award from the Office of the Secretary of War through the U.S. Army Contracting Command under the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) program.
According to Kopin, the award is the second major United States government investment dedicated to advancing its color MicroLED microdisplay technology, bringing the company’s total IBAS funding to $34 million. The award also enables the company to accelerate onshoring of its MicroLED manufacturing processes, ensuring that display components for future defense and commercial systems are designed and built in the United States.
The additional funding will support the development of two more MicroLED displays, purpose-built for specific ground soldier equipment and missions, and for pilot head-up displays (HUDs). The company stated that visual systems of this kind demand brightness, durability, power efficiency, and reliable performance in all operational environments. Kopin added that these capabilities improve situational awareness for soldiers in the field and open the door for wider integration into future weapon sights, helmet-mounted systems, and augmented reality (AR) platforms.
“Securing additional IBAS funding represents significant continued validation of Kopin’s MicroLED technology and its importance to next-generation U.S. defense systems. Combined with our previous IBAS investment, the U.S. government has now committed $34 million through IBAS to advance MicroLED technology. This enables Kopin to accelerate the development and U.S.-based manufacturing of additional high-performance MicroLED displays designed for next-generation soldier and pilot systems while separately enabling the foundational MicroLED platform technology for our AI Interconnect products,” said Michael Murray, Kopin’s CEO.
Kopin noted that this second-round award validates its roadmap for MicroLED displays for U.S. military applications and programs, and underscores the company’s commitment to advancing U.S.-made displays and optical solutions. The company added that with a growing number of program awards across defense, medical, enterprise, and AI infrastructure markets, it is expanding its position as a “trusted, critical technology supplier” of visual and optical components.
